Four artists start under $2,000, and five start at $2,000 or less. Two start at $3,500 or more. For 10 of the 11, the most popular package costs between $2,400 and $4,500.

Size is a good way to compare. Seven artists use a 16×20 inch canvas for their smallest package. Even so, their prices start anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500, so the same size painting can cost more than twice as much. It depends on the artist, the paint, and how much finishing work is included.

Travel is not included in these prices, with one exception. Alexandra in Appleton includes travel within 50 miles of her home. For every other artist, your quote adds travel, and a hotel if they need one.

These are the prices artists show on their pages. They are not the average price couples paid. We update this table when artists join or change their prices.

New: Live wedding painters for $2,500 or less

Five of our 11 US artists have a package at $2,500 or less. These prices were checked on October 13, 2026, and they do not include travel unless we say so.

Alexandra, Appleton, Wisconsin. $1,500 for a 16×20 inch acrylic painting, or $2,400 for her most popular 24×36 inch painting. Travel within 50 miles of Appleton is included.

Rachel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. $1,650 for a 16×20 inch painting, or $2,400 for an 18×24 inch painting in a gold frame, with a print to keep.

Ryan, San Diego, California. $1,800 for a 16×20 inch oil painting, or $2,400 for an 18×24 inch oil painting.

Hana, San Antonio, Texas. $1,800 for a 12×16 inch painting, or $2,400 for her most popular 18×24 inch painting.

Alexandra, Columbus, Ohio. $2,000 for an 18×24 inch painting in oil or acrylic, or $2,500 for her most popular 24×36 inch painting.

Keep travel in mind. If your whole budget is $2,500, travel included, start with the artist who lives closest to your venue and ask about their smallest package. An artist a short drive away usually costs less overall than one who has to fly.

New: How much does a live wedding painter cost in New York City?

For New York City weddings, the artists on our New York page start at $1,500 to $5,000, before travel. Their most popular packages cost $2,400 to $8,500, and three of the four put theirs between $2,400 and $3,500.

None of our artists live in New York City yet, so every New York quote adds travel. Rachel in Philadelphia and Anton in Baltimore are the closest.

We don’t publish an average cost for New York. Four artists is too small a group to give a fair one. Prices were checked on October 13, 2026, and our New York live wedding painters page lists each artist’s packages.

Your starting price vs. your final quote

The starting price is an artist’s smallest package, before travel. Your final quote is often higher, for three main reasons. The artist may need to travel to you. You may want a bigger painting or more people in it. And you may add extras.

Travel makes the biggest difference. Our US artists travel to the weddings they paint, and most live a few hours’ drive or a short flight away. Your quote will include their travel, and a hotel if they need one. For example, Alexandra includes travel within 50 miles of her home in Appleton, Wisconsin. If you are further away, she adds the cost of travel and, if needed, a hotel.

Each artist lists their extras on their page, such as extra people, pets and framing. Rachel adds a gold frame and a print to her two bigger packages. Aeron and Tracy can also paint an arch backdrop or seating chart, from $1,000.

The easiest way to get a true price is to ask. Send your date, your venue and the moment you want painted. Your artist can change the quote as many times as you like.

What changes the price

Seven things change the price the most: canvas size, extra people or pets, hours at your wedding, travel, finishing time, the type of paint, and the artist’s experience. Each artist weighs these in their own way.

Canvas size and detail

A bigger canvas costs more, but it also gives the artist more room for detail. Faces, dresses, flowers and the venue can all be painted more finely. If detail matters most to you, choose a bigger size.

Ryan charges $1,800 for a 16×20, $2,400 for an 18×24 and $3,100 for a 24×30. Alexandra in The Woodlands charges from $3,500 for a 16×20 up to $6,000 for a 24×36.

Adding people, pets and loved ones

You can ask your artist to add family, friends, a pet, or a loved one who has passed away. These are usually extra. Mabel charges from $150 for each extra person and from $50 for each pet. Aeron and Tracy charge $3,200 for the two of you, $4,000 for up to six people, and $4,400 for up to eight. For ideas, see our guide to honoring a loved one at your wedding.

Hours at your wedding

Most of the smallest packages include four to eight hours of painting. Hana paints for four hours or more, Alexandra in Appleton for five to seven, and Mabel for six to eight. To see how it fits into your day, read what happens on the day with a live wedding painter.

Travel

Every artist on this list travels to weddings. An artist who lives near your venue spends less on flights and hotels, so a nearby artist with a higher price can cost about the same as one who has to fly. If you cancel, some artists keep the cost of flights they have already booked.

Finished on the day, or in the studio

Aeron and Tracy are the only US artists on this list who finish the whole painting at your wedding. Most others show you the painting that evening, then finish it in their studio. Lauren and Hana deliver within two weeks. Rachel ships within two to four weeks, or you can plan ahead to take it home that night. Alexandra in Columbus delivers within three months.

Oil or acrylic paint

Four artists on this list paint in oil, and five use acrylic. Alexandra in Columbus works in both. The oil painters start at $1,800 to $5,000, and the acrylic painters start at $1,500 to $3,500. Acrylic dries fast, so more of the work can be done on the night. Oil dries slowly, so it is often finished in the studio. Neither one is better, so choose the look you love most.

The artist’s experience

Experience can affect price, but not always in the way you might think. Hana has painted professionally for about a year and starts at $1,800. Johnna has more than 20 years of practice and starts at $3,300. Anton trained in classic oil painting and starts at $5,000. But Alexandra in Appleton has painted for more than 10 years and starts at $1,500. So look at each artist’s paintings and reviews, not just the price. Our questions to ask before hiring a live wedding painter can help on your first call.

Deposits and payment

A deposit holds your date. Eight of our 11 artists ask for 25% of the price. One asks for 30%, and two ask for 50%. All of them collect the rest 30 days before your wedding. On a $3,000 package, that is a $750 deposit at 25%, $900 at 30%, or $1,500 at 50%.

You pay through TheWeddingPainters, so your booking and payments stay together in one place. Each artist sets their own cancellation terms, and you can read them on the artist’s page before you pay.

Can friends and family help pay for your painter?

A live wedding painter can feel like a lot for one couple to cover. It’s easier when the people who love you chip in. With a TheWeddingPainters gift card, parents, friends and guests can put money towards your painting instead of buying another thing for your registry.

Anyone can buy one, and they can give alone or as a group. For a group gift, the buyer makes the first contribution, then invites up to 20 people by email to add their share. Cards start at $25, so everyone gives what suits them. Here’s what that can look like: 20 guests giving $100 each adds up to $2,000, enough for the starting package of several of our US artists, before travel. Each card goes up to $2,000, and you can buy more than one, so a bigger gift is easy to build.

You then choose your artist and put the gift towards your booking. A few things to know:

  • A gift card doesn’t hold your date or guarantee a particular artist. Send your enquiry as soon as you know your date and venue.
  • You can use more than one gift card on the same booking, as long as they’re in the same currency.
  • If your booking costs less than the gift credit, the rest stays on the card for later, such as a commission.

Want to give one? Visit our gift cards page, or read how to give a wedding gift card, alone or as a group.

Prices by region

Starting prices are about the same across the country, because most of our US artists travel nationwide. What changes is the cost of travel in your quote.

New York. Our New York live wedding painters paint across New York City, the Hudson Valley, Westchester, Long Island and the Hamptons. See the New York section above for their prices. The same artists also paint in New Jersey, and you can see everyone on the East Coast too.

Central USA. Our Central USA live wedding painters cover the middle of the country, from Chicago and Minneapolis down to Texas, Nashville and New Orleans. Five of our artists live in Texas, the Midwest or the South, including Alexandra in Columbus, Ohio. Cities are further apart here, so keep an eye on travel costs.

West Coast. Our West Coast live wedding painters cover California up to the Pacific Northwest. Ryan, Lauren, and Aeron and Tracy all live in Southern California.

To see every artist and sort by date and price, visit our US live wedding painters page.

Live painting or guest portraits?

A guest illustrator draws or paints quick portraits of your guests, and each guest takes one home as a gift. Our US guest illustrators start from $2,500, about the same as a live painting. Two of them, Mabel and Rachel, also offer live wedding paintings. To see which suits your day, read the difference between live wedding painters and wedding illustrators.

When to book

The most popular dates book up first. Our US artists are few and hand-picked, so popular Saturdays can go months ahead. It costs nothing to ask, and you do not commit until you pay a deposit. So reach out as soon as you know your date and venue. Our guide on how far in advance to book a live wedding painter has more tips.

Can you recommend a live wedding painter for under $2,500?

Yes. Five of our US artists have a package at $2,500 or less: Alexandra in Appleton, Wisconsin, from $1,500; Rachel in Philadelphia from $1,650; Ryan in San Diego and Hana in San Antonio from $1,800; and Alexandra in Columbus, Ohio, from $2,000. Is a bigger canvas worth it?

It depends on what you want to see. A bigger canvas costs more, but it gives the artist room for finer detail. A 16×20 is a good size for just the two of you. An 18×24 or bigger leaves room for more detail, and for your venue and guests too. Your artist can help you choose.

Can we take the painting home on the night?

Usually, you see the painting that evening. Then the artist finishes it in their studio and sends it to you, most within one to eight weeks, and some take up to three months. Want it that night? Aeron and Tracy finish the whole painting at your wedding, and Rachel can arrange for you to take yours home that night.

Is a live wedding painter worth it?

For many couples, yes. Your guests get to watch a painting come to life, and you get a piece of art from your day to keep forever. To help you decide, read Is a live wedding painter worth it? and reasons to have a live wedding painter at your wedding.
