Wedding Gifts for Couples Who Have Everything

Prices checked on October 26, 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

The best wedding gift for a couple who has everything is something they cannot easily buy themselves: a painting of their own wedding, an experience, or a gift that gives forward. Guests can pool money into a TheWeddingPainters gift card towards a hand-painted wedding portrait. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

A couple who has everything does not need more things. They need a gift that means something, takes up no shelf space, and does not duplicate what they already own. Below you will find what “has everything” really means, what to give each kind of couple, and the one idea most guides miss: a painting of their own wedding, paid for by the guests together.

What do you give a couple who has everything?

Give a couple who has everything something they cannot easily buy for themselves. Three kinds of gift do that well: a keepsake made just for them, an experience to enjoy together, and a gift that gives forward, such as a honeymoon contribution or a donation. A gift that is used up, such as good food, also works, because it leaves nothing to store.

What does “has everything” really mean?

The couples who say they have everything are not all the same, and the right gift depends on which one you are buying for.

They already live together: their kitchen is full, so skip the registry basics. Give something to use up, do together, or keep.

It is a second or later-life wedding: both homes are already furnished. Experiences, a donation, or a keepsake of the day suit them best.

They asked for no gifts: respect it. A handwritten note is enough, or a small contribution to a fund they have named.

They simply have great taste: choose personal over practical, and art over objects.

Which wedding gifts can a couple not buy for themselves?

A couple can buy almost anything, but they cannot easily commission a painting of their own wedding as a surprise. That is the gift this guide leads with. One honest limit: a painting needs a wedding photo, so it arrives after the day. A gift card solves that, because you can hand it over at the wedding and the painting follows.

A gift card the guests pool together

Price: from $25, and each card is worth up to $2,000

Where to buy: TheWeddingPainters gift card

Why it works: Guests can pool the gift. Up to 20 people can contribute by email invite or shared link, and each contributor adds a message. The couple sees the names and messages, and the amounts stay private. A card can be sent straight away or on a date you choose, any balance stays on the card, and a card is valid for five years. Here is an example, and it is our own sum: 12 guests giving $75 is $900. A gift card does not reserve a date or an artist, and dollar cards go towards dollar listings. Pound cards go towards pound listings. [Jack to confirm: can a US buyer buy a pound card, and should the copy say so?] Read our guide to gift cards, alone or as a group.

Which artists can paint a couple’s wedding as a gift?

A hand-painted portrait is made from a favorite wedding photo, and the couple keeps it for life. The first three artists below are based in the UK and priced in pounds. [Jack to confirm: delivery and import duty wording for US clients] The last is in Georgia and priced in dollars. We add more artists over time, so see all of them on our US paintings from photos page.

A classical oil portrait by Dorian

    Image: https://theweddingpainters.com/objects/listing-images/gallery-backfill-2da34439-1421-45aa-b377-22e126b07ab6-0-1785166201540-g1600.webp

Price: from £1,499, with a tailored quote based on size and complexity

Where to buy: Dorian on TheWeddingPainters, in London

Why it works: Dorian paints in oil in a classical, highly realistic style. He is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, has won more than 30 portrait prizes, and has appeared on British TV, including Portrait Artist of the Year. He has painted portraits for well-known names, including Cynthia Erivo, and he is happy to take commissions from clients in the US. A detailed portrait takes two weeks to three months. He sends progress photos every two weeks on detailed work, shares a final image for approval, and includes a certificate of authenticity. It suits a couple with a classic eye for art.

    An oil painting by Jacob

    Price: from £1,950

Where to buy: Jacob on TheWeddingPainters, in Shropshire

Why it works: Jacob paints in oil and offers two ways to commission. Impressionistic Moments is soft and dreamy, and suits smaller sizes or a photo where the couple faces away. Detailed Couple Paintings add detail to expressions, outfits and surroundings, and suit larger sizes. He can combine several photos, including guests, into one painting. He has a 5 out of 5 rating from 6 reviews, and says he spent his formative years in the classical art world of Rome and Tuscany. His listing does not state a turnaround, so ask for one when you inquire.

    A photorealistic painting by Rob

    Price: from £3,000, professionally framed

Where to buy: Rob on TheWeddingPainters, in Lancashire

Why it works: Rob paints in photorealistic acrylic and oil, and a painting usually takes four to six weeks. It comes framed, with a certificate of authenticity, and is delivered by courier. Rob and a professional photographer take reference photos of the couple in wedding attire at a location they choose, so this gift needs the couple to take part. It is the one for a big milestone. He has a 5.0 rating from 6 reviews, and his listing says he has painted private commissions for more than 20 years.

A warm, whimsical painting by Averi

Price: from $900 for an 11 by 14 inch canvas, and from $1,200 for 18 by 24 inches

Where to buy: Averi on TheWeddingPainters, in Georgia

Why it works: Averi paints in acrylic, in a warm, rich style that is a little magical, and she has a 5 out of 5 rating from 6 reviews. She paints from a wedding photo, and extra people are from $90 each. A painting usually takes two to four weeks plus shipping, and a rush finish is available from $250. A pot of $900 is 12 guests at $75 or 18 guests at $50, which is our own sum. See more artists on our US paintings from photos page.

A live wedding painter, for a couple who has not booked one

    Price: depends on the artist

Where to buy: our US live wedding painters page

Why it works: A live wedding painter paints the day as it happens, and the couple keeps the finished painting. A pooled gift card can go towards one. This is not a surprise gift, because the couple must agree first and book months ahead. Do not give it if they have already booked one.

What experiences make a good wedding gift for a couple who has everything?

    A cooking class for two

Price: a Cozymeal gift card is any amount from $10 to $1,000, and its page says $200 to $275 generally covers two guests for most in-person classes, private chef experiences or food tours

Where to buy: Cozymeal gift cards

Why it works: It is an evening together with nothing to store. The card goes by email, print or text, and it never expires. Cozymeal says it has over 45,000 five-star reviews.

A table at a restaurant they love

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a gift card from a restaurant they already love

Why it works: It is a night out, with no thing to put on a shelf. Ask a friend of the couple which place they love, so the gift feels chosen.

What gifts can a couple use up?

A gift set of good olive oil

Price: $89 for the Duo Set

Where to buy: Brightland, rated 4.9 out of 5 from 540 reviews on its own site on October 26, 2026

Why it works: They will use it and enjoy it, and it takes up no space once it is finished.

A gift basket of local food

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a local deli or farmers market

Why it works: It is a treat to share on their first weekend home, and it suits a couple who says no to more objects.

    What gifts give forward?

A contribution to their honeymoon fund

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: the registry the couple has set up. According to The Knot’s honeymoon registry round-up, updated July 9, 2026, Honeyfund has no guest fees and SPUR Experiences charges no fees on experience purchases. The Knot’s own registry takes a 2.5% fee on card payments

Why it works: The couple chooses how it is spent, and guests can see exactly what they are paying for.

    A donation in their name

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: GlobalGiving, which says you can make a tax-deductible donation to any project in honor of someone, and send an eCard or a print-at-home card

Why it works: It suits a couple who prefers less stuff. Check that they would like it first, as some couples name a charity of their own.

What small and sentimental gifts work?

A handwritten letter: free, and often the part they keep. Write one memory you have of them as a couple.

A framed photo from before the wedding: a picture of the two of them from earlier years, in a good frame.

A rose bush or a small tree: one commenter in a UK parenting forum thread in August 2024 called a rose bush the best gift they received at their wedding. Check that they have a garden first.

    What should you skip?

Skip more wine unless you know they love it, because couples often end up with bottle after bottle. Skip anything they did not ask for that will become more stuff. And skip anything that ignores a no-gifts request. If you are not sure, a handwritten note is always welcome.

When should you give the gift, and how much should you spend?

Give the gift at the wedding, or send it before or after. A gift card can be scheduled to arrive on a date you choose, and a painted gift arrives after the wedding, once there are photos. Spend what you would on any wedding gift, because a couple who has everything is not asking for more. Our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift has the ranges, and our wedding gift calculator can help you choose an amount.

Wedding gifts for couples who have everything in the UK

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good wedding gift for a couple who has everything?

A good wedding gift for a couple who has everything is one they cannot easily buy themselves, such as a hand-painted portrait of their wedding, an experience for two, or a contribution to their honeymoon. A TheWeddingPainters gift card lets guests pool money towards a painting, and the couple chooses the artist.

Is it okay to give a gift if the couple asked for no gifts?

If the invitation says no gifts, the kindest choice is to respect it and send a handwritten note. If the couple has named a honeymoon fund or a charity, a small contribution there is usually welcome. Ask a close friend or family member if you are unsure.

How much should you spend on a wedding gift for a couple who has everything?

A couple who has everything does not need a bigger gift, only a more thoughtful one, so spend what you would on any wedding gift. Our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift has the ranges, and a TheWeddingPainters gift card starts at $25.

Can guests pool their money for one wedding gift?

Yes. Guests can pool their money for one larger gift, and a TheWeddingPainters gift card lets up to 20 people contribute by email invite or shared link. Each contributor adds their own amount from $25 and a message, and the couple sees the names and messages but not the amounts.

What is a good wedding gift for a second marriage or an older couple?

A good wedding gift for a second marriage or an older couple is something to enjoy or keep rather than something for the house, because their homes are usually full. Experiences, a donation in their name, a gift set of good food, or a painting of the day all work well.

What can you give if you cannot go to the wedding?

If you cannot go to the wedding, send a handwritten card with a gift that travels well. A TheWeddingPainters gift card can be scheduled to arrive on a date you choose, or you can add to a gift that other guests are pooling.

Can you give a painting of the couple’s wedding as a gift?

Yes, if you have a photo of the wedding or the couple agrees to a photo session, an artist can paint it. Averi on TheWeddingPainters paints in two to four weeks, Rob takes four to six weeks, and Dorian takes two weeks to three months for a detailed oil portrait. A painted gift arrives after the wedding, so give a gift card on the day if you want something to hand over.

Is a gift card too impersonal for a wedding?

A gift card can be personal if it goes towards something the couple will keep. A TheWeddingPainters gift card comes with a message from you, and any balance stays on the card for five years, so the couple can take their time choosing an artist.

Bridal Shower Gift Ideas She’ll Actually Keep

Prices checked on October 26, 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

A bridal shower gift usually costs $50 to $75, and a registry item is the safest choice. For a gift she will keep, guests can pool their money into a TheWeddingPainters gift card, which up to 20 people can contribute to. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

A shower is a chance to celebrate the bride and to give her something that feels like her. Below you will find how much to spend, what to give, and one idea that most guides miss: pooling the gift, so that everyone’s $50 or $75 adds up to something she will hang on her wall for years.

How much should you spend on a bridal shower gift?

Most published etiquette guides say $50 to $75 is a fair amount, and more for a close friend or family member. None of them cites survey data, so treat it as a convention, not a statistic. Here is our own guidance:

    A small gift: $30 to $50

    A typical gift: $50 to $75

A close friend or family member: $100 to $200

A pooled gift, per guest: $50 to $75

Want a number for your own situation? Try our wedding gift calculator. Choose United States and A bridal shower, and it suggests an amount based on how close you are to the couple. The shower gift is usually smaller than the wedding gift. For a wider look at wedding gifts, see our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift.

When and how do you give a bridal shower gift?

The best time to give a bridal shower gift is at the shower. Invitations usually go out four to six weeks before, and the host, not the bride, sends them. If you cannot go and you are close to the bride, send a gift. If you are not close to her, a handwritten card is enough.

Why not pool the gift? The shower gift she will keep

Here is an example. If 15 guests each give $50 to $75, the pot is $750 to $1,125. That is enough for a hand-painted portrait made from her favorite photo, or a good start towards a live wedding painter for the big day. That is our own sum, not a rule, and the numbers will change with your group. To see each guest’s share for your own group, use the group split in our wedding gift calculator, which works for up to 20 people.

A TheWeddingPainters gift card makes pooling simple. Up to 20 people can contribute by email invite or shared link, and each card is worth up to $2,000. She chooses the artist and the photo herself. A card does not reserve a date or an artist, and dollar cards go towards dollar listings.

A few honest notes. Someone has to organize it, so ask the host or the maid of honor, and check with the bride’s family first. A pooled gift works best as the main gift, or alongside a small registry gift from each guest. It suits a bride who has everything, or who already lives with her partner.

What is a good last-minute bridal shower gift?

A TheWeddingPainters gift card is a good last-minute gift, because it can be sent straight away or on the day. A handwritten note with a small gift, such as a stoneware bowl, also works. A painted gift needs weeks, so save it for when you have time.

What is a good gift for a bride who has everything?

A painting made from a favorite photo is a good gift for a bride who has everything, because it is personal and she will keep it. Guests can pool the cost, and a gift card lets her choose the artist.

Do you give a gift at both the bridal shower and the wedding?

Is it okay to give a bridal shower gift that is not on the registry?

  • Bridesmaid Thank You Gifts: Ideas They’ll Actually Keep

Bridesmaid Thank You Gifts: Ideas They’ll Actually Keep

Prices checked on October 26, 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

The best bridesmaid thank you gifts are personal and useful on the wedding day, such as a robe, a piece of jewelry she can wear that day, or a handwritten note. One wedding publisher’s research puts the average at $80 each. For a gift she will keep, a TheWeddingPainters gift card, from $25, goes towards a painting of a favorite photo. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

Your bridesmaids have given you months of time, patience and early mornings. A thank you gift is your chance to say so in a way they will remember. Below you will find what to give, how much to spend, when to give it, and one idea that is a little different: a single portrait of your bridal party, printed for each of them.

How much should you spend on bridesmaid thank you gifts?

There is no set amount. One wedding publisher’s 2022 survey of 452 respondents puts the average at $80 per person, with about 30% of couples spending under $50 and 12% spending $150 or more. Here is our own guidance:

    A small gift: $25 to $50

    A typical gift: $50 to $100

A keepsake, or a maid of honor gift: $100 to $250

Gifts do not have to be identical, but it is kind to keep the prices similar. For a wider look at what to spend on wedding gifts, see our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift.

When should you give bridesmaid thank you gifts?

Most couples give bridesmaid thank you gifts at the rehearsal dinner, on the morning of the wedding or at a farewell brunch. Wearable gifts, such as jewelry, suit the rehearsal dinner, so your bridesmaids can wear them the next day. Gifts they will not wear can wait until a few days after the wedding, when things are calmer.

A gift they will keep: one illustration, a print for every bridesmaid

A single illustration of the bridal party, made from one photograph, can be printed for every bridesmaid, so everyone gets the same artwork and the cost is shared across the group. The same illustration can also become your thank you cards.

Price: from £355 for a bespoke portrait from your photo, with prices in pounds

Where to buy: Hannah on TheWeddingPainters, in London

Why it works: Hannah draws digital portraits from your photo, and the artwork can be printed up to 1 meter tall. Her package also includes a card design, so the same illustration can be your thank you cards. Her listing says it takes about 10 working days. She has a 5 out of 5 rating from 3 reviews. Ask her for a quote for your whole bridal party. Her prices are in pounds, so a dollar gift card cannot be used on her listing.

A painting for your maid of honor

Your maid of honor has done the most. A painting of a favorite photo of the two of you is a gift she will hang for years. It costs more than a typical bridesmaid gift, so it suits a maid of honor, a sister or a best friend.

Price: from $900 for an 11 by 14 inch canvas with two main figures

Where to buy: Averi on TheWeddingPainters, in Georgia

Why it works: Averi paints in acrylic, in a warm, rich style that is a little magical, and she has a 5 out of 5 rating from 6 reviews. She paints from a photograph you send her, and a painting usually takes two to four weeks plus shipping. A rush finish is available from $250, depending on your due date. Order at least six weeks before the wedding.

    A luxury portrait commission

    Price: from £3,000, in pounds

Where to buy: Rob on TheWeddingPainters, in Chorley, Lancashire

Why it works: Rob paints high-end portraits in oils and acrylics, a painting usually takes four to six weeks, and professional framing and courier delivery are included. He has a 5 out of 5 rating from 6 reviews. This is far above a typical bridesmaid budget, so it is for a very special gift. Ask him whether he can paint a bridal party or a maid of honor. His prices are in pounds, so a dollar gift card cannot be used on his listing.

A TheWeddingPainters gift card, for the bridesmaid who has everything

Price: from $25, and each card is worth up to $2,000

Where to buy: TheWeddingPainters gift card

Why it works: She chooses the artist and the photograph herself, perhaps from her own wedding or a favorite trip. A gift card can be sent straight away or on a date and time you pick. A $25 card will not cover a painting on its own, so add more than one card, or give it with another gift. Dollar gift cards go towards dollar listings, any balance stays on the card, and a card is valid for five years. A card does not reserve a date or an artist. You can also read our guide to gift cards, alone or as a group.

    Other gifts they will love

    A robe for getting ready

    Price: $29

Where to buy: the Birdy Grey Kenny Robe, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 161 reviews on the brand’s own site

Why it works: Your bridesmaids will wear it for the hair, the makeup and the photographs, and it is a simple way to match. Keep the prices similar by giving everyone the same robe.

Jewelry she can wear on the day

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a jewelry store you trust, or an independent jeweler

Why it works: A small necklace or a pair of earrings that goes with her dress is something she can wear that day. Choose a simple style, and check the metal she wears.

    A getting-ready treat

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a pharmacy, a department store or a local shop

Why it works: A small box with a hand cream, a lip balm and a face mask is a kind way to say thank you before a long day. It is also an easy gift to buy at the last minute.

    A personalized tote bag

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a local print shop or an independent maker

Why it works: It holds everything they need for the day, and it is something they will use after it. Order a month ahead if it is personalized.

    A handwritten note

    Price: free

Why it works: A few honest lines can mean more than the gift. Write one thing she did that made the planning easier, and one thing you love about her.

Should the maid of honor get a different gift?

A maid of honor does not have to get a more expensive gift than the other bridesmaids. Many couples keep the main gift the same, then add a small extra for her, such as a personal letter or a painting of a favorite photo, to thank her for the extra work.

How far ahead should you order?

Order personalized gifts about a month before the wedding. Hannah’s listing says a portrait and card design takes about 10 working days, and printing and shipping take extra time. Averi paints in two to four weeks plus shipping, so order a painting at least six weeks before the wedding. A TheWeddingPainters gift card can arrive on the day, so it is a good choice if time is short. Read our guide to how to commission a wedding portrait painting for the full process.

What if the wedding is only a few weeks away?

Give a gift you can have quickly, such as a handwritten note, a robe or a piece of jewelry from a store. Add a TheWeddingPainters gift card for a keepsake later. A gift card can be sent straight away or on the day.

Giving bridesmaid thank you gifts in the UK

In the UK, one gift retailer’s guide says most people spend between £10 and £30 per bridesmaid. Pound gift cards go towards pound listings, so you can use one on Hannah’s listing. You can also browse the artists on our UK paintings from photos page.

How did we work out these amounts?

The only survey figures are one wedding publisher’s 2022 research of 452 respondents, and we say so. Everything else is our own guidance, and it is labelled. Artist prices are the prices on their listings. We checked everything on October 26, 2026, and we review it every year.

    Frequently asked questions

What are good thank you gifts for bridesmaids?

Good thank you gifts for bridesmaids are personal and useful on the wedding day, such as a robe for getting ready, jewelry she can wear that day, or a handwritten note. For a gift she will keep, add an illustration of the bridal party or a TheWeddingPainters gift card towards a painting.

How much should you spend on bridesmaid thank you gifts?

There is no set amount. One wedding publisher’s 2022 survey of 452 respondents puts the average at $80 per person. Our guidance is $25 to $50 for a small gift, $50 to $100 for a typical gift, and $100 to $250 for a keepsake or a maid of honor gift.

When do you give bridesmaid thank you gifts?

Most couples give bridesmaid thank you gifts at the rehearsal dinner, on the morning of the wedding or at a farewell brunch. Wearable gifts suit the rehearsal dinner, and gifts she does not wear can wait until a few days after the wedding.

Do bridesmaid gifts have to be identical?

No. Bridesmaid gifts do not have to be identical, but it is kind to keep the prices similar. A matching robe or an illustration for everyone is a simple way to keep it fair.

Should the maid of honor get a bigger gift?

A maid of honor does not have to get a more expensive gift than the other bridesmaids. Many couples add a small extra for her, such as a personal letter or a painting of a favorite photo, to thank her for the extra work.

What is a thoughtful bridesmaid gift that is not jewelry?

An illustration of the bridal party printed for each bridesmaid, a robe for getting ready, a handwritten note, or a painting of a favorite photo for the maid of honor are all thoughtful gifts that are not jewelry. A TheWeddingPainters gift card also lets her choose an artist.

How far ahead should you order bridesmaid gifts?

Order personalized gifts about a month before the wedding. Hannah’s listing says a portrait and card design takes about 10 working days, and Averi paints in two to four weeks plus shipping, so order a painting at least six weeks before the wedding.

What if the wedding is only a few weeks away?

Give a gift you can have quickly, such as a handwritten note, a robe or a piece of jewelry from a store, and add a TheWeddingPainters gift card for a keepsake later. A gift card can be sent straight away or on the day.

  • Wedding Day Gift for Bride from Groom: Ideas She’ll Keep

Wedding Day Gift for Bride from Groom: Ideas She’ll Keep

Prices checked on October 26, 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

The best wedding day gift from a groom to his bride is something personal that she can open privately before the ceremony, such as a handwritten letter with a piece of jewelry, or a painting of the night you got engaged. For a gift she will keep, a TheWeddingPainters gift card, from $25, goes towards a painting of your wedding day. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

A wedding day gift from the groom is a small, private moment in a very public day. She opens it while she is getting ready, and it sets the tone for everything after. Below you will find what to give, how much to spend, when to give it, and a painting she will keep. There are also gifts that do not come from us, each one checked.

Does the groom give the bride a gift on the wedding day?

A groom does not have to give his bride a wedding day gift, but it is a lovely tradition, and many couples exchange something. There is no rule about what it should be or what it should cost. The gift is usually given the night before the wedding or on the morning of the wedding. It does not need to match what she gives you.

How much should you spend on a wedding day gift for your bride?

There is no set amount, and no survey gives an exact figure for what partners spend on each other. Here is our guidance:

    A small gift with a letter: $25 to $100

    A meaningful gift: $100 to $500

A keepsake, such as a painting: $500 to $1,500 or more

One keepsake retailer’s guide gives $200 to $1,500, but it does not say where the figure comes from. Spend what feels right for the two of you, and remember that a handwritten letter can mean as much as the gift. For a wider look at what to spend, see our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift.

When and how should you give it?

Give the gift the night before the wedding or on the morning of the wedding. Have it waiting in the room where she gets ready, so she can open it in private. If you are keeping to the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony, ask a trusted friend, her maid of honor or a family member to deliver it. Avoid a courier delivery on the morning itself, because a late van is the one thing you cannot fix on the day. If you are doing a first look, you can give it to her yourself.

A gift she will keep: a painting by an artist you choose

Most gifts from a groom are bought. A painting is commissioned, and that makes it feel like it came from you. These are the options we would look at first.

Averi, a painting of the night you got engaged

Price: from $900 for an 11 by 14 inch canvas, from $1,200 for 18 by 24 inch

Where to buy: Averi on TheWeddingPainters, in Georgia

Why it works: Averi paints in acrylic, in a warm, rich style that is a little magical, and she has a 5 out of 5 rating from 6 reviews. She paints from photographs you send her. Send a photo from the night you proposed, or from your engagement shoot, and ask her whether she can paint from it. A painting usually takes two to four weeks plus shipping, and a rush finish is available from $250, depending on your due date. Ask for it at least six weeks before the wedding.

A TheWeddingPainters gift card, in the envelope with your letter

Price: from $25, and each card is worth up to $2,000

Where to buy: TheWeddingPainters gift card

Why it works: She chooses the artist and the photograph after the wedding, once the photos arrive. A gift card can be sent straight away or on a date and time you pick, so it can arrive on the morning of the wedding. Dollar gift cards go towards dollar listings, any balance stays on the card, and a card is valid for five years. For a bigger gift, add more than one card. A card does not reserve a date or an artist. You can also read our guide to gift cards, alone or as a group.

Not booked a live painter yet? Make it a gift

If you have already booked a live painter for the wedding, skip this section. If you have not, a live painting can be your gift to her: you choose the moment, such as the first dance or the first kiss, and the finished painting is a keepsake from the day itself. Book it together, because a live painter is part of the wedding for both of you.

Why it works: Lauren paints in a classical, Old Masters style, in oil on canvas, and she paints throughout your wedding day. A 25% deposit secures the date, and the painting is delivered within two to four weeks. She has a 5 out of 5 rating from 5 reviews.

Price: from $1,800 for a 12 by 16 inch acrylic painting

Where to buy: Hana on TheWeddingPainters, in Texas, available across the US

Why it works: Hana’s style is romantic and whimsical, and she paints for at least four hours. The smallest package is finished on the night, and the larger ones are delivered within two weeks. Hana is new to TheWeddingPainters and has no reviews yet.

For more live painters in your state, see our US live wedding painters.

Portraits of the bride and bridesmaids while they get ready

A watercolor portrait artist can paint the bride and her bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding. It is an idea, not a listed package, so ask the artist whether they can do it for your date and how much it would cost. Guest portrait artists usually paint for about four hours, so it works best when the artist is already booked for the wedding.

Price: from $2,500 for about four hours of live watercolor portraits

Where to buy: Mabel on TheWeddingPainters, in Massachusetts

Why it works: Mabel paints watercolor portraits of guests, alone or as couples, and she has a 5 out of 5 rating from 4 reviews. Travel is quoted for your wedding location.

Price: from $2,000 for four hours of live watercolor portraits

Where to buy: Bella on TheWeddingPainters, in New Jersey

Why it works: Bella paints 5 by 7 inch watercolor portraits, and travel within her service area is included in the package price. She has a 5 out of 5 rating from 2 reviews.

You can browse more artists on our US wedding illustrators page.

    Other gifts she will love

    Pearl or gold jewelry

Where to buy: Mejuri, which has a 4.3 out of 5 rating from more than 5,600 reviews on Trustpilot

Why it works: A pair of pearl earrings or a fine gold pendant is a classic wedding day gift, and she can wear it that day. Choose something that matches her jewelry, and ask her maid of honor to check the metal she wears.

    A robe for the morning

Where to buy: the Parachute Classic Bathrobe, which a product-testing site named its best terry cloth robe

Why it works: She will wear it for the hair, the makeup and the photographs, and it is a gift she will use for years. Choose it in a color that works with her pictures.

A carry-on suitcase for the honeymoon

    Price: $295

Where to buy: the Away Bigger Carry-On, which carries a Wirecutter “Our Pick” 2025 badge on Away’s site

Why it works: It comes with free returns within 100 days, and you can personalize it with up to three letters. Pack it, and put a note inside that says where you are going.

    Her signature fragrance

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a department store or a fragrance counter

Why it works: A scent she wears on her wedding day is one she will remember. Choose the one she already wears, and ask her sister or maid of honor to check the bottle. It is also an easy gift to buy at the last minute.

A framed photograph of the two of you

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a local framer or photo shop

Why it works: Choose a photo from the night you got engaged, or from your first holiday together. A good frame turns it into something she will put on a shelf.

    A handwritten letter

    Price: free

Why it works: Many brides say the words matter most. Write about the first time you knew, what you love about her, and what you are looking forward to.

What should you write in the letter?

Keep it short, honest and in your own voice. Start with a memory only the two of you share. Then say one thing you admire about her, and one promise you are looking forward to keeping. You could end with a line such as: “I will be the one waiting at the end of the aisle, and I have never been so sure of anything.” Write it by hand, and take your time.

How far ahead should you order?

Order a painting at least six weeks before the wedding. Averi usually paints within two to four weeks plus shipping, and a rush finish from $250 depends on your due date. Jewelry and personalized items are best ordered a month ahead. A TheWeddingPainters gift card can arrive on the day, so it is the best choice if time is short. Read our guide to how to commission a wedding portrait painting for the full process.

What if the wedding is only a few weeks away?

Give a gift you can have quickly: a handwritten letter, a fragrance she already wears, or a framed photograph. Add a TheWeddingPainters gift card for a painting later. A gift card can be sent straight away or on the day.

How did we work out these amounts?

No survey gives an exact amount for what a groom spends on a wedding day gift for his bride, so we say so. We show our own guidance, and one retailer’s range, each labelled. Artist prices are the prices on their listings. We checked everything on October 26, 2026, and we review it every year.

    Frequently asked questions

What should a groom give his bride on the wedding day?

A groom should give his bride something personal that she can open privately before the ceremony. A handwritten letter with jewelry, a robe for the morning, or a painting of the night you got engaged are all good choices. For a gift she will keep, add a TheWeddingPainters gift card towards a painting of your wedding day.

How much should a groom spend on a wedding day gift for his bride?

When does the groom give the bride her gift?

Most grooms give the gift the night before the wedding or on the morning of the wedding. If you are keeping to the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony, ask a trusted friend or her maid of honor to deliver it privately. Avoid a courier delivery on the morning itself.

Does the bride give the groom a gift too?

Many brides do, but there is no rule. If you would like to exchange gifts, agree it together beforehand, so that neither of you is caught out. The gifts do not need to cost the same.

What is a sentimental gift for a bride that is not jewelry?

A painting of the night you got engaged, a handwritten letter, a framed photograph of the two of you, or a robe for the morning are all sentimental gifts that are not jewelry. A TheWeddingPainters gift card also lets her choose an artist for a painting of your wedding day.

How far ahead should you order a wedding day gift for your bride?

Order a painting at least six weeks before the wedding. One artist on TheWeddingPainters usually paints within two to four weeks plus shipping, and offers a rush finish from $250 depending on your due date. Personalized items and jewelry are best ordered a month ahead.

  • Pearl Anniversary Gift Ideas: 30th Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas

Pearl Anniversary Gift Ideas: 30th Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas

Prices checked on 22 October 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

The traditional 30th wedding anniversary gift is pearl, the modern gift is diamond, and the flower is the lily. For a gift they will keep, a TheWeddingPainters gift card, from £25, goes towards a painting of their wedding day. Many people also give pearl earrings from about £130, or a framed wedding photograph. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

A TheWeddingPainters gift card design with a hand-painted garden scene

Thirty years is a long time to love someone. It deserves a gift that lasts as long as the marriage has. Below you will find the traditional gifts, what to spend, and gifts they will keep, including a painting made from their wedding photo. If you are buying for your parents, there are ideas for children giving together.

What is the traditional Pearl Anniversary Gift?

The traditional gift for a 30th wedding anniversary is pearl. The modern gift is diamond, and the flower is the lily. Pearl is also the gemstone for the 30th. The traditional gift is the same in the UK and the US.

Pearls grow slowly over time, which is why they stand for a marriage that has grown strong over 30 years.

How much should you spend on a 30th wedding anniversary gift?

There is no set amount, and no survey gives an exact figure. Here is our guidance:

A gift from a partner: £50 to £150 or more

A gift from one child: £50 to £150

A group gift from the children: £500 to £2,000 or more, shared

Paintings by leading artists start from about £1,500, so many families share the cost. One US guide for adult children suggests $500 to $5,000 shared for a milestone anniversary, and $50 to $200 from each child in an ordinary year. A kind, handwritten letter with a small gift can mean as much as a big one. For a smaller milestone, see our 25th anniversary gift ideas.

A painting of their wedding day, by an artist they will love

A painting of the wedding day grows more special with time. After 30 years, the photo has a story, and a painting turns it into a piece of art for the wall. These three artists paint from wedding photos. For more, see our luxury wedding gifts for couples and our guide to how to commission a wedding portrait painting.

Jacob, oil portraits in two styles

    Price: from £1,950

Where to buy: Jacob on TheWeddingPainters, in Nesscliffe, Shropshire

Why it works: Jacob paints in oil, in a classical Old Masters style or in a looser, more impressionistic style. You send your favourite wedding photo, or a few photos for one painting, and say what you want to capture. You can collect the painting, have it hand-delivered for a mileage fee, or arrange insured postage. Ask him how long it will take.

    Dorian, classical and realistic oils

Price: from £1,499, quoted by size and detail

Where to buy: Dorian on TheWeddingPainters, in London

Why it works: Dorian is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, and he paints in a classical or highly realistic oil style. A painting takes two weeks to three months. He sends progress photos every two weeks for detailed portraits, and a final image for your approval. He can join more than one photo into one painting if the light matches.

Rob, a portrait in wedding clothes, 30 years on

    Price: from £3,000

Where to buy: Rob on TheWeddingPainters, in Chorley, Lancashire

Why it works: Rob paints in oils and acrylics, and a painting usually takes four to six weeks. He and a professional photographer take the reference photos of the couple in wedding clothes, on the wedding day or at another time. That means a couple can have a new portrait made 30 years on. The painting is framed professionally and couriered to you. You can also ask him if he can work from your original wedding photo.

Not sure which artist? Give a gift card

    Price: from £25

Where to buy: TheWeddingPainters gift card

Why it works: The couple picks the artist and the photo themselves. A gift card can be sent straight away or on a date and time you pick, so it can arrive on the morning of the anniversary. Any balance stays on the card, and a card is valid for five years. For a bigger gift, add more than one card. A card does not reserve a date or an artist.

How do you use an old wedding photo?

Many wedding photos from 30 years ago are prints, so start by scanning the best one. A photo shop or a good scanner will do. Ask the artist what size of file they need before you scan. Pick a photo with clear faces and good light. If you love two photos, an artist can sometimes join them into one painting, as long as the light matches.

Pearl gifts and other gifts to give

    Pearl stud earrings

    Price: £130

Where to buy: E.W Adams 9ct gold freshwater pearl stud earrings at John Lewis, rated 4.3 out of 5 from 42 reviews

Why it works: They are solid 9ct gold with an 8mm freshwater pearl, which is a classic gift for a 30th.

A restored and framed wedding photo

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a local framer or photo shop

Why it works: It is quick, personal and easy to give. A good frame turns an old print into something they will want to hang.

    A bunch of lilies

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a local florist

Why it works: The lily is the traditional flower for the 30th. Add a card with a note from the family.

A dinner at a place that matters to them

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: book a table at the place where they met, or where they celebrated before

Why it works: After 30 years, an evening with time to talk is a gift in itself.

    A letter from the children

    Price: free

Why it works: Parents often say the words matter most. Write about one thing the marriage gave you.

Gifts from the children and group gifts

Parents often have most of what they need, so many children give together. Brothers, sisters and other family can share the cost of one bigger gift, like a painting of the wedding day. With a TheWeddingPainters group gift card, up to 20 people can add to the same gift by email invite or shared link, from £25 each. Read more in our guide to gift cards, alone or as a group.

An anniversary party with an artist

If you are planning a party for the 30th, an artist can be the gift for everyone to enjoy. A guest illustrator paints portraits of the guests, and a live wedding painter paints the party as it happens. Book a few months ahead, and talk to the couple first. Travel costs extra.

Giving a 30th anniversary gift in the US

Pound gift cards go towards pound listings, and dollar gift cards go towards dollar listings. In the US, paintings from photos start from $900. See our US studio commissions and our guide to luxury wedding gifts for couples in the US.

For a milestone, Anton, in Baltimore, paints in oil in the Old Masters tradition. His live painting packages start from $5,000 for an 11 by 17 inch painting, and he works across the US. Ask him through his listing about a studio painting from a wedding photo.

What to write in a 30th anniversary card

Keep it short and kind. You could write: “Happy 30th anniversary. Thank you for showing us what love looks like.” Or: “Thirty years, and still the best team we know.” Or, from the children: “We are so lucky to be yours.”

How far ahead should you order?

Order a painting at least three months before the anniversary. Dorian’s paintings take two weeks to three months, and Rob’s usually take four to six weeks, plus framing and delivery. If time is short, a TheWeddingPainters gift card can arrive on the day, so they can pick the artist later.

How did we work out these amounts?

No survey gives an exact amount for a 30th anniversary gift, so we say so. We show our own guidance, and one published range from a US guide, each labelled. Artist prices are the prices on their listings. We checked everything on 22 October 2026, and we review it every year.

  • Wedding Gifts for Parents from the Bride and Groom: Thank-You Gifts Theyll Treasure

Wedding Gifts for Parents from the Bride and Groom: Thank-You Gifts Theyll Treasure

Prices and ratings checked on October 21, 2026. There are no affiliate links in this guide, and nothing here is sponsored.

Quick answer: the best wedding gifts for parents are personal, not expensive. One they won’t see coming is a painting of their own wedding photo, given on your wedding day. You can arrange it through TheWeddingPainters, a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos. Short on time? A TheWeddingPainters gift card lets them choose a painting later, perhaps of your wedding day.

Your parents have been part of this from the very first “we’re engaged”. A thank-you gift on your wedding day is a chance to tell them what that has meant. It doesn’t need to cost much. The gifts that make parents cry happy tears are the ones that show you’ve thought about them, their story and your family.

When do you give your parents their wedding gift?

Most couples give their parents a gift either at the rehearsal dinner or on the morning of the wedding. The rehearsal dinner is relaxed and gives everyone time to enjoy the moment. The wedding morning, often during a first look or while getting ready, is more emotional. Anything to wear on the day, like a handkerchief or cufflinks, should be given before everyone gets dressed. Larger gifts can be delivered to their home after the wedding.

How much should you spend on gifts for your parents?

There’s no set amount, and parents rarely want you to spend much. A heartfelt letter can mean more than anything you buy. If you’d like to give something special, some couples give one joint gift to each set of parents, and others give a smaller gift to each parent.

The gift they won’t expect: a painting of their own wedding photo

Somewhere in your parents’ home is a photo from their own wedding day. Imagine giving them that moment, painted by hand as an original piece of art, on the day you get married. It’s a gift that says “we see the love that made our family”, and it’s one almost nobody thinks of.

    Price: from $900

How long: order at least two months before your wedding

Where to buy: paintings from photos

Why it works: an artist paints their wedding photo by hand on canvas, so it becomes an original painting rather than an old print in a drawer. Averi, based near Atlanta, paints warm, glowing portraits from photos, from $900 for an 11×14 inch canvas, usually in two to four weeks, plus shipping. Maisy, one of our UK artists, has painted parents’ wedding photos for several couples as a wedding-day gift.

How to get the photo without spoiling the surprise: ask a sibling, aunt or grandparent to borrow the album, or take a quick phone photo of the framed print when you visit. Old prints work well. Photograph them flat, in daylight, without glare. Faded colors are usually fine. Mention it when you get in touch, and the artist will talk you through what’s possible.

Short on time? Give a gift card instead

If your wedding is only weeks away, a TheWeddingPainters gift card works just as well. Print it and tuck it into your card with a note: “for a painting of your wedding day, or ours”. Your parents can choose the photo and the artist themselves. Gift cards start from $25, last for five years, and can be added to by siblings or other family members.

Gifts for the mother of the bride

Something sentimental and personal works best. A painting of her own wedding photo, a letter from the bride to read on the wedding morning, or a piece of jewelry that matches what she’s wearing on the day are all lovely choices. Many brides also give their mother a handkerchief for the ceremony, embroidered with the date.

Gifts for the father of the bride

Fathers of the bride are often the hardest to buy for and the easiest to make cry. Give him something to keep, like a painting of his own wedding photo, or something for the day, like cufflinks or an embroidered handkerchief, before he walks you down the aisle. A letter in his pocket for after the father-daughter dance is free and unforgettable.

Gifts for the mother of the groom

A gift from both of you says “welcome to the family” as well as thank you. A painting of her wedding photo, a digital photo frame loaded with family photos, or a night away to rest after the wedding all work well.

Gifts for the father of the groom

Something he’ll use and think of you when he does. A painting of his own wedding photo, a cooking class or experience to share with your mom, or a digital frame of family photos are good places to start.

    More thank-you gifts for parents

A digital photo frame full of family memories

    Price: around $149

Rating: 4.7 out of 5 from more than 17,000 Amazon reviews

Where to buy: Aura Carver digital frame

Why it works: load it with photos from your parents’ lives, your childhood and your wedding before you give it. Family members can keep adding photos through the app, so the frame keeps filling up long after the wedding.

A cooking class for the two of them

    Price: from $50

Where to buy: Sur La Table e-gift card

Why it works: after months of helping with your wedding, give them a night out of their own. Sur La Table runs date-night cooking classes for couples, and its gift cards never expire.

A weekend away after the wedding

    Price: any amount

Where to buy: Airbnb gift card

Why it works: weddings are tiring for parents too. A weekend away lets them rest and relive the day together. Airbnb gift cards arrive by email within minutes and never expire.

A live painting of the parent dance

Price: our US live painters start from $1,500 to $5,000, plus travel

Where to book: US live wedding painters

Why it works: if you’re booking a live wedding painter, ask them to paint the father-daughter or mother-son dance as a gift for your parents. Book early, as painters get booked up months ahead.

    When to order

At least two months before: a painting of their wedding photo, so there’s time for the painting, any changes and shipping.

Six to eight weeks before: anything engraved or embroidered.

Any time, even the night before: a gift card, a letter, or a digital frame you can load with photos yourself.

Gifts for stepparents and blended families

If you have stepparents, or parents who have separated, the kindest approach is usually to give each parent their own gift, of similar thought rather than identical cost. A painting can be personal to each household: one of a parent’s wedding photo, another of a family photo that means something to them. If a stepparent raised you, say so in your note. It will mean more than the gift.

Remembering a parent who has died

If you’ve lost a parent, a gift for the parent who’s here can also honor the one who isn’t. Some couples give the surviving parent a painting of their own wedding photo, so both parents are together on the canvas on your wedding day. Several of our artists can also combine more than one photo into a single painting, so a loved one can be painted into a family scene. Ask the artist when you get in touch, and allow extra time.

What to write in the card

If you’re not sure where to start, try one of these and make it your own.

“Everything we know about love, we learned from watching you.”

“Thank you for every lift, every late night and every piece of advice. Today wouldn’t be what it is without you.”

“You’ve been part of this story from the very beginning. We’re so glad you’re here for this chapter.”

“We hope this painting brings back your day as much as today will always remind us of ours.”

    Wedding gifts for parents FAQ

What is a good wedding gift for parents from the bride and groom?

A good wedding gift for parents is personal rather than expensive. A painting of their own wedding photo, a heartfelt letter, a digital frame full of family photos, or a weekend away after the wedding are all thoughtful choices. On TheWeddingPainters, paintings from photos start from $900 in the US.

When do you give your parents their wedding gift?

Most couples give their parents a gift at the rehearsal dinner or on the morning of the wedding. Give anything they’ll wear on the day before they get dressed. Larger gifts can be delivered after the wedding.

How much should you spend on wedding gifts for parents?

There’s no set amount, and a heartfelt letter can mean more than anything you buy. The ideas in this guide range from a free letter to a painting from $900, checked on October 21, 2026.

Can an artist paint my parents’ wedding photo?

Yes. An artist can paint your parents’ wedding photo by hand as an original painting, even from an old or faded print. Order at least two months before your wedding. If you’re short on time, a TheWeddingPainters gift card lets your parents choose the painting later.

What do you give the father of the bride?

Give the father of the bride something personal, like a painting of his own wedding photo, an embroidered handkerchief or cufflinks for the day, or a letter to read after the father-daughter dance.

How can you honor a parent who has died on your wedding day?

One gentle way is to give the surviving parent a painting of their own wedding photo, so both parents are together on the canvas. Some artists can also combine photos to paint a loved one into a family scene. Ask the artist when you get in touch and allow extra time.

Engagement Party Gift Ideas: What to Bring and How Much to Spend

Prices and ratings checked on October 22, 2026. No affiliate links, nothing sponsored.

Most wedding guides suggest $25 to $100 at an engagement party, and a gift is never required. A card, a bottle of bubbly or a small keepsake is plenty. For a gift they will keep, a TheWeddingPainters gift card, from $25, goes toward a painting of their engagement photos. TheWeddingPainters is a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos.

An engagement party is about celebrating the couple, not buying them things. So the right gift is small, thoughtful and easy to carry. Below, you will find what to spend, what to bring, and what to do if you cannot be there. You will also see how this fits with your wedding gift. For that, our free wedding gift calculator gives you an amount for your own situation, with every source shown.

Do you bring a gift to an engagement party?

No. A gift is not required at an engagement party. Etiquette experts say a small congratulatory gift is fine but not expected, because an engagement party is not driven by gifts the way a shower or a wedding is.

Close family, best friends and wedding party members are the most likely to bring something. Many guests bring only a card. If the invitation says no gifts, bring a card and nothing else. If the party is themed around stocking the couple’s bar, a bottle of their favorite wine or liquor is enough.

How much should you spend on an engagement party gift?

Most wedding guides suggest $25 to $100, depending on how close you are to the couple.

Coworkers and distant friends: $25 to $50

Close friends and family: $50 to $100 or more

Cash in a card: the same amounts apply

No survey gives an exact figure for engagement party gifts, so treat these amounts as a guide, not a rule. A personal gift can mean as much as a pricey one.

Your engagement party gift should also be smaller than your wedding gift. One common rule splits your gift budget into 20% for the engagement, 20% for the shower and 60% for the wedding. That makes an engagement gift about a third of your wedding gift. Not sure what to give at the wedding? Try our wedding gift calculator, or read our guide to how much to spend on a wedding gift.

Engagement party gifts they will keep

A gift card for a painting of their engagement photos

    Price: from $25

Where to buy: TheWeddingPainters gift card

Why it works: A gift card can be sent straight away or on a date and time you pick, so it can arrive on the night of the party. It goes toward a painting made from the couple’s engagement photos by a US artist on TheWeddingPainters. Any balance stays on the card, and a gift card is valid for five years. A card does not reserve a date or a particular artist. The couple picks the artist and books when they are ready.

A painting from their engagement photos, from a group

Price: from $900 for an 11 by 14 inch canvas

Where to buy: US studio commissions

Why it works: It turns the photos from the engagement shoot into something to hang at home. Most paintings take two to four weeks, plus shipping, so it is not a last-minute gift. For a bigger gift, friends and family can each add from $25 to one TheWeddingPainters gift card, and you can invite up to 20 people by email. Dollar gift cards go toward artists who list in dollars.

Easy engagement party gifts to bring along

A journal for the two of them

    Price: $16.95

Where to buy: Our Q&A a Day: 3-Year Journal for 2 People, a hardcover from Potter Style

Why it works: Each day has one question, and both partners write a short answer. After three years, they can see how their answers match, differ and change.

A wedding planner to get them started

Price: $13.29 on sale, $25.99 list price

Where to buy: Wedding Planner (hardcover) at Target, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 24 reviews

Why it works: It has 224 pages and 14 tabbed sections for the budget, guests, flowers, gifts and the honeymoon. It also has a back pocket for keepsakes.

A bottle of bubbly and a card

    Price: your choice

Where to buy: a wine shop near you

Why it works: It is the classic engagement party gift, and it is easy to carry. Pick the couple’s favorite, check that both of them drink, and write a short note in the card.

A cooking class for a date night

    Price: from $50

Where to buy: Sur La Table e-gift card

Why it works: The card is emailed to the couple and can be used for cooking classes as well as for kitchen gear. It never expires, so they can pick a night that suits them.

    A weekend away

    Price: any amount you choose

Where to buy: an Airbnb gift card, sent by email now or scheduled for later

Why it works: Wedding planning is busy, and a short trip gives them a break. Airbnb gift cards and balances do not expire.

Should you bring an engagement party gift or send it?

Bring small gifts and cards to the party. Send anything large, heavy or fragile to the couple’s home, so they do not have to carry it. A digital gift card is easy either way. You can email it on the day, or schedule it to arrive at a time you pick.

If you want to give cash, put it in a card with a kind note. The same amounts apply.

What if you can’t go to the engagement party?

You do not need to send a gift, but a card is a kind gesture. If you are close to the couple, you can send a small gift, or schedule a TheWeddingPainters gift card to arrive on the day of the party, so they see it when it counts.

Can you give a group gift or a gift from a couple?

Yes. Friends and family often go in together for one bigger gift. Each person gives a little, and the couple gets something they would not have bought themselves. With a TheWeddingPainters group gift card, everyone adds to the same gift by email invite or shared link. For more ideas, see our 28 group wedding gift ideas for every budget.

If you and your partner are going together, one gift from both of you is normal. Put both names on one card.

Do you still need to give a wedding gift?

If you go to the wedding, yes. An engagement party gift is a small extra, and the wedding gift is the bigger one. Etiquette experts say a gift is expected at a wedding, but not at an engagement party. If you will also go to the shower, plan for three gifts and spend the most on the wedding. Our wedding gift calculator can help you work out the wedding amount, and our last-minute bridal shower gifts guide can help with the shower.

Hosting the engagement party? Book an artist

If you, or a group of you, are hosting, an artist at the party can be the gift. Talk to the couple or the hosts first, and book a few months ahead. Travel costs extra.

Guest portrait artists: Alexandra, in Columbus, Ohio, starts from $1,500 for four hours and about 50 portraits, with a portrait of the couple included. Rachel, in Philadelphia, starts from $2,500 and paints a framed portrait of the couple too. See all our US guest portrait artists.

Live wedding painters: A live painter paints the party as it happens. US artists start from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the artist. See our US live wedding painters.

Paying for it: A TheWeddingPainters gift card can go toward the cost, so a group can chip in together.

Engagement party gifts in the UK

In the UK, engagement parties are less common, and many guests bring a card or nothing at all. Guests who do bring a gift usually keep it small. One UK guide puts it at about £20 to £100 or more, depending on how close you are to the couple. For more, read our UK engagement gift ideas.

For a keepsake, pound gift cards go toward pound listings. Mary, in Derry, paints A4 watercolor wedding commissions from £646. Elise, in London, paints in a minimalist, impressionistic style from £850. See our UK portrait commissions.

    Mary’s listing and Elise’s listing.

How did we work out these amounts?

We read published etiquette guides and expert advice on engagement party gifts. Most give a range, not a single number, so we show a range. No survey gives an exact amount, and we say so. We checked everything on October 22, 2026, and we review it every year.

What can you give if the bridal shower is today?

Can bridal shower guests club together on a gift?

Yes, and it’s often the best way to give something special at the last minute. Instead of everyone buying a small kitchen gift, the shower guests can add to one TheWeddingPainters gift card. One person starts it and invites the others by email or a shared link, and everyone adds what they like.

Together, you could cover something the couple will keep forever.

A painting of their favorite wedding photo: painted by hand once the wedding is over. Averi, for example, starts at $900. See our paintings from wedding photos.

A live painter at the wedding: our US live wedding painters start from $1,500 to $5,000, plus travel. Showers are often only weeks before the wedding, and painters book up early, so check the couple’s date is still free. See our US live wedding painters.

A guest portrait artist at the reception: our US guest portrait artists start from $1,500 to $2,500, and every guest takes a portrait home. See our US guest portrait artists.

Watercolor portraits of wedding guests painted live by Bella

For a bigger group gift, you can add more than one card. For more ideas, see our group wedding gift ideas.

How much should you spend on a bridal shower gift?

There’s no set amount. Most guests spend less on the shower gift than on the wedding gift, so if you’re going to both, it’s fine to keep the shower gift small and save more for the wedding. If the couple has a registry, check it first, as anything on it makes a good shower gift. And if you’d like to give something bigger than your budget allows, join a group gift.

How do you make a last-minute gift feel special?

Print it: print the gift card or e-gift and put it in a card, rather than leaving it in an email.

Pair it: add one small thing to unwrap, like the cookbook, with the gift card tucked inside the cover.

Write a real note: a few lines about the couple, or your favorite memory of the bride, means more than any price tag.

Say what it’s for: if it’s a gift card for a painting, tell them in the card, for example “for a painting of your favorite moment from the big day”.

  • Destination Wedding Gift Ideas: What to Give, and When

Destination Wedding Gift Ideas: What to Give, and When

Prices checked on October 21, 2026. There are no affiliate links in this guide, and nothing here is sponsored.

Quick answer: you don’t have to give a gift at a destination wedding, because traveling to be there is already a gift. If you’d like to give one, pick something that doesn’t need packing, like a digital gift, a treat at the venue, or a present sent to their home. A brilliant option is a gift card from TheWeddingPainters, a marketplace of hand-picked live wedding painters, guest portrait artists and artists who paint from photos. Guests can add to one card together, and the couple can use it to bring a live painter or guest portrait artist to the wedding, or to have their favorite photo from the trip painted once they’re home.

A destination wedding is a big ask of everyone. Guests pay for flights, hotels and time off, and the couple knows it. So the best destination wedding gifts are light, thoughtful and easy to share. Here’s what to give, how much to spend, when to give it, and how to club together for something the couple will keep forever.

Do you need to give a gift at a destination wedding?

No, not if you’re traveling to be there. Most couples see their guests’ time and travel as the gift, and many say so on their wedding website. A card with a heartfelt note is always welcome.

That said, plenty of guests still want to mark the day, and a few situations make a gift more likely.

You’re in the wedding party: bridesmaids and groomsmen often club together for one group gift.

You’re close family: parents and grandparents often give something bigger, either before the wedding or once the couple is home.

You can’t attend: if you’re not traveling, sending a gift from the registry, or a card with a gift card inside, is a lovely way to be part of the day.

The golden rule: don’t pack it

The couple has to get everything home again. A boxed present means extra luggage, a risk of damage, and possibly customs charges if they’re flying back from abroad. So skip anything bulky or fragile.

Send it digitally: gift cards and registry gifts can be sent by email before or after the wedding.

Arrange it at the venue: champagne in their room or a dinner on the trip can be booked with the resort or hotel ahead of time.

Ship it home: anything physical should go to the couple’s home address, timed for when they’re back.

    Our favorite destination wedding gifts

We’re a little biased, because this is what we do. But a painting suits a destination wedding better than almost any other gift. The couple chose that place for a reason, and a painting captures it in a way they’ll keep forever. Here are four ways to give one.

    1. A painting of their favorite photo from the trip

Warm, hand-painted portrait of a couple painted from their wedding photo by Averi.

Price: from $900, or any amount on a gift card

When to give it: before the wedding, or once they’re home

Why it works: this is the easiest way to give a painting, and it works whether you’re attending or not. Once the couple is home and has seen every photo, they choose the one they love most, maybe the ceremony on the beach or the view from the terrace, and an artist paints it by hand. Averi, based near Atlanta, paints from wedding photos in acrylic on canvas, from $900 for an 11×14 inch canvas, usually in two to four weeks. Give a gift card now and the couple can choose the photo, size and style later. See our paintings from wedding photos.

    2. Bring a live painter to the wedding

Oil painting of a couple's first dance, painted live at their wedding by Lauren.

Price: our US live painters start from $1,500 to $5,000, plus travel and accommodation

When to give it: six months or more before the wedding, agreed with the couple

Why it works: this is the showstopper. A live wedding painter sets up at the wedding and paints one moment, often the vows or the first dance, while guests gather round to watch. The couple flies home with an original painting of their day in that place. Our artists travel across the US and abroad, with flights and a hotel added to the quote.

Because it’s a big gift, it works best as a group gift. For example, a $1,500 painting shared between ten guests is $150 each before travel. It can’t be a surprise, though. The painter needs to be booked with the couple and their venue or planner, so talk to the couple first. See our US live wedding painters.

    3. Book a guest portrait artist for the reception

atercolor portraits of wedding guests painted live by Bella.

Price: our US guest portrait artists start from $1,500 to $2,500, plus travel

When to give it: six months or more before the wedding, agreed with the couple

Why it works: a guest portrait artist paints quick portraits of the guests at the reception, and each guest takes theirs home. At a destination wedding, that’s a souvenir that fits flat in a suitcase. Bella, for example, paints around 12 guests an hour, with four hours from $2,000. It’s a gift for the couple that every guest gets to enjoy. See our US guest portrait artists.

    4. Club together on a gift card

    Price: any amount from $25

When to give it: any time, even on the day

Why it works: a TheWeddingPainters gift card lets everyone chip in, whatever their budget, and lets the couple decide what to do with it. They can put it towards a live painter or guest portrait artist for the wedding, including the artist’s travel and hotel, or towards a painting of their favorite photo afterwards.

One person starts the gift and invites others by email or a shared link. The card can be scheduled to arrive on the wedding day, sent to you to pass on, or printed and tucked into a card. It lasts for five years, works with any artist on TheWeddingPainters in any country, and any balance left after a booking stays on the card. For a bigger group gift, you can add more than one card.

More destination wedding gift ideas we love

Not every couple wants art on the wall, so here are more gifts we’d happily give. None of them needs packing.

A contribution to their honeymoon fund

    Price: any amount

Why it works: many destination couples have a honeymoon fund or a registry with experiences on it. It’s quick, digital and exactly what they asked for. Check their wedding website first.

Champagne or dinner on the trip

    Price: depends on the venue

Why it works: ask the resort or hotel to put a bottle of champagne in the couple’s room after the ceremony, or prepay a dinner for the night after the wedding. They’ll enjoy it right there, and there’s nothing to carry home.

    Luggage for married life

    Price: $275

Where to buy: Away The Carry-On

Why it works: a good suitcase for all the trips ahead. Away’s Carry-On can be personalized with up to three letters and comes with free repairs for five years. Ship it to their home so it’s waiting when they get back.

A photo album of the trip

Price: from about $95 for 20 pages

Where to buy: Artifact Uprising Layflat Photo Album

Why it works: a beautiful linen-covered album for the wedding and the trip around it. Offer to make it with them once the photos arrive, so they choose the pictures.

A trip back for their first anniversary

    Price: any amount

Where to buy: Airbnb gift card or a Mr & Mrs Smith gift card

Why it works: help them get away again. An Airbnb gift card arrives by email within minutes and never expires. A Mr & Mrs Smith gift card goes towards a stay at one of its boutique hotels or villas, booked within two years.

    A donation in their name

    Price: any amount

Why it works: if the couple has asked for no gifts, a donation to a cause they care about, perhaps one connected to the place they married, is a thoughtful way to mark the day.

When to give a destination wedding gift

Six months or more before: a live painter or guest portrait artist, booked with the couple, as dates go early.

Before you fly: gift cards, registry gifts and honeymoon fund contributions, plus arranging champagne or dinner with the venue.

On the day: a card with a heartfelt note, or a gift card scheduled to arrive that morning.

Once they’re home: a painting of their favorite photo, a photo album, or anything shipped to their address.

How much should you spend on a destination wedding gift?

There’s no set amount. If you’re traveling, it’s fine to spend less than you would for a wedding close to home, or nothing at all. If you’d like to give something meaningful without a big bill, a group gift is the answer, because a small amount each adds up to something special.

Can’t make it to the wedding?

If you can’t travel, a gift is a lovely way to show you’re thinking of them. Send something from their registry, contribute to their honeymoon fund, or schedule a gift card to arrive on the wedding morning with a note. If friends who are attending are planning a group gift, ask to join in.

    Traveling from the UK?

If you’re a UK guest at a wedding abroad, the same ideas work in pounds. Our UK gift card starts from £25 and works with artists in any country. UK artists paint from wedding photos from £450 on paper. Many of our UK live painters and guest portrait artists travel to weddings across Europe, with travel added to the quote. Destination wedding gift FAQ

Do you give a gift for a destination wedding?

You don’t have to. Most couples see their guests’ travel and time as the gift. Many guests still give a card, a small gift, or a share in a group gift, and guests who can’t attend often send something from the registry.

How much should you spend on a destination wedding gift?

There’s no set amount, and it’s fine to spend less than usual if you’re paying to travel. Clubbing together with other guests is a good way to give something meaningful for less. The ideas in this guide start from $25, checked on October 21, 2026.

Should you bring a gift to a destination wedding?

It’s best not to. The couple would have to fly it home. Send a digital gift, arrange something with the venue, or ship a gift to their home for when they’re back.

What should you give if you can’t attend a destination wedding?

Send a gift from their registry, contribute to their honeymoon fund, or schedule a gift card to arrive on the wedding day with a note. You could also join a group gift with guests who are going.

What is a good group gift for a destination wedding?

A painting is a lovely group gift, because it captures the place the couple chose. Guests can club together on a gift card the couple can put towards a live painter at the wedding or a painting of their favorite photo afterwards.

Can we hire a live painter for a destination wedding?

Yes. Our US live wedding painters start from $1,500 to $5,000, and travel across the US and abroad, with flights and accommodation added to the quote. Book six months or more ahead, and agree it with the couple and their venue.

  • How Much to Spend on a Wedding Gift and What to Do When the Number Is Bigger Than One Wallet

How Much to Spend on a Wedding Gift and What to Do When the Number Is Bigger Than One Wallet

    The short answer

Most wedding guests spend between $100 and $150 on a gift. The Knot’s Guest Study puts the average at $150, and Zola’s 2026 survey puts it at $130. Spend more for your closest people, a little less for colleagues, and never more than you can comfortably afford.

    • Coworker or acquaintance: about $75 to $150
    • Friend or relative: about $100 to $200
    • Best friend or immediate family: about $150 to $250 or more

The average is one guest’s number, though. Put six to ten people together at that level and you reach a gift that none of you could give alone, which is where the rest of this guide goes.

How much to spend by relationship

The two biggest wedding platforms give slightly different ranges, so here they are side by side. Where they overlap is a safe place to land.

Your relationship to the coupleThe KnotZola (via Scripps News)
Best friend or immediate family$250+$150 to $200 (immediate family or wedding party)
Close friend$150 to $250$100 to $150 (friend or relative)
Good friend$100 to $200$100 to $150 (friend or relative)
Extended family$100 to $150$100 to $150 (friend or relative)
    Acquaintance or coworker$100 to $150$75 to $100
Distant relative or friend of a friend$50 to $100Not listed separately

The Knot’s own survey data adds two averages: guests spent about $160 on close friends and family, and about $140 on casual friends. These are guides, not rules. Etiquette expert Lizzie Post, quoted by The Knot, says the right figure is whatever you can give comfortably.

    What changes the number

Your relationship sets the starting point. Five things move it up or down.

    SituationWhat the sources suggest
Bringing a plus-oneZola suggests spending 1.5 to 2 times what you would alone. The Knot suggests $100 to over $200 as a couple.
Invited as a familyGive one gift from the household, about $150 to $200 or more, depending on travel costs.
Traveling to the weddingAttending costs about $610 on average, and $1,500 to $5,000 for a destination wedding. It is fine to spend less on the gift, but still give something.
In the wedding partyThe Knot’s data shows the same average, about $160, as for close friends and family.
Not attendingStill send a gift if you can. Check the registry for something in your range, or join a group gift to share the cost.

The old “cover your plate” rule, where you match what the couple spent on your meal, is no longer recommended. You are a guest, not a customer, and you can’t know what your seat cost.

If you’re invited to the engagement party and the shower too

Set one total budget for all three events, then split it 20% for the engagement gift, 20% for the shower and 60% for the wedding. On a $250 budget, that is $50, $50 and $150.

A shower gift is expected, because gifts are the point of the party. An engagement gift is kind but not required. If you skip it, a 40/60 split between the shower and the wedding works just as well. You don’t have to give equal amounts, so it is fine to put a little more into one event and less into another.

For engagement gifts that are personal rather than expensive, see our engagement gift ideas.

Cash, a registry gift or a gift card

Guests are split almost down the middle. In The Knot’s 2024 data, about 50% gave a physical gift, 40% gave cash and 10% gave a gift card. All three are fine, and many couples now prefer cash. People are marrying later, around 32 on average according to The Knot, so many already own what a registry would offer.

If you give cash, put it in a card with your name on it so the couple knows who it came from.

A gift card sits between cash and a gift. It is flexible like cash, but it points the couple toward something lasting. The Wedding Painters gift card starts at $25 and can be used with any artist on the platform, for live painting, a painted portrait or an illustration. You can schedule it to arrive for the couple, send it to yourself to give in person, or print it. Any balance left after a booking stays on the card, and it is valid for five years.

    What each budget buys

A number only helps if you know what to do with it. Here is how the common budgets break down, from a simple card to a gift that lasts.

    BudgetGood fits
$50 to $100A registry item or a cash-fund contribution, with a handwritten card. A gift card from $25 also works.
$100 to $150A mid-range registry item, or cash or a gift card in this range.
$150 to $250A larger registry piece, a cash fund, or a gift card the couple can put toward something special.
$250 to $500A strong solo gift for a close friend or family member, or your share of a group gift.
$500 and upBest as a group gift. A hand-painted portrait of their wedding day is the kind of keepsake a group can give together.

A painting of their wedding day

Artist Averi paints wedding photos by hand in acrylic on canvas. You don’t need the couple’s help: you send her a photo, and the painting can be shipped to you or straight to them. If it’s a surprise, tell her so she doesn’t contact anyone else. Her prices as of October 13, 2026, before shipping:

    SizePrice fromWhat it includes
Keepsake, 11×14 in$900The two of them against a soft, simple background
Storybook, 18×24 in$1,200Up to four people and more of the venue or scenery. Her most popular size.
Statement, 24×36 in$1,700Up to four people and the full venue in the background

Extra people start at $90 each and pets at $40 each. Most paintings take two to four weeks. Each one is signed, and one round of small changes is included. See all of this on our US studio commissions page.

    When one wallet isn’t enough

The average guest gift is $130 to $150, so a group of friends or relatives can give something far bigger than any one of them would. Here is what each person pays toward Averi’s three sizes, before shipping.

    People chipping inKeepsake ($900)Storybook ($1,200)Statement ($1,700)
    4$225$300$425
    6$150$200about $283
    8about $113$150about $213
    10$90$120$170
    12$75$100about $142

Six people giving $150 each, or eight giving $150 each, lands right on a Keepsake or Storybook painting. Nobody needs to go above their usual budget.

With a TheWeddingPainters gift card, one person starts the gift and shares an invitation by email or a magic link. Everyone adds what they like, and partial contributions are fine.

    Frequently asked questions

Is $100 enough for a wedding gift?

Yes. It is a little under the $150 average, but it sits inside the $100 to $150 range most guests spend, and The Knot calls it a perfectly fine amount. Treat the average as a starting point, not a target.

Is $50 enough for a wedding gift?

It can be, for a distant relative, a friend of a friend or a tight month. It is at the low end of what the sources suggest, so pair it with a warm handwritten note. No one should go into debt for a gift.

How much should I give for a coworker’s wedding?

Most guidance says $75 to $100, with some sources going up to $150. Lean toward the higher end if you have worked together for more than a year.

Should I spend more if I’m bringing a guest?

You don’t have to, but Zola suggests 1.5 to 2 times your solo amount. Put both names on the card.

How much should I give for a destination wedding?

There is no set amount. Travel can cost $1,500 to $5,000, so many couples expect guests to spend less on the gift. Still give something if you can.

    Do I give a gift if I can’t attend?

Yes, it is good etiquette. Choose something from the registry in your range, or join a group gift.

How much should I spend on a shower or engagement gift?

Sources range from $25 to $100 for a shower gift. The simplest approach is the 20/20/60 split described above.

Is it okay to give cash?

Yes. Cash is widely accepted, and some couples prefer it. Include a card so they know who gave it.

Can a group give one gift?

Yes, and it is a good way to give something bigger without anyone overspending. See the table above for what each person pays toward a hand-painted portrait.
