The short answer: in the UK, live wedding painters on TheWeddingPainters start from £750 to £2,200. That is the price of each artist’s smallest package, before travel and extras. More than half of our 26 UK artists (14 of 26) start under £1,000, and 24 of 26 start between £750 and £1,500. Once you add a bigger canvas, more detail, travel or extras, most couples spend between £800 and £2,500. We checked every price on 8 October 2026.
In London: the seven live wedding painters on our site who are based in London start from £800 to £1,599, and four of the seven start under £1,000. This is a small group, so treat it as a guide to starting prices, not an average of what London couples pay. We don’t publish a London average because there isn’t enough data to support one.
A live wedding painter is one of the few wedding choices that doesn’t get packed away or forgotten. It becomes a piece of your day on your wall, something you’ll walk past for years and feel right back there. This guide shows you what UK artists really charge, what changes the price, and how to get a quote you can trust.

What these prices mean
We use the same three terms on this page and in our guide Is a live wedding painter worth it?, so you can compare like with like.
Starting price: the price of an artist’s smallest package, as shown on their page. It does not include travel or extras.
Your quote: the price your artist sends you for your wedding. It adds anything that isn’t in the starting price, such as travel, a bigger canvas, extra people or framing.
What most couples spend: £800 to £2,500 for a standard booking, once the painting is sized and quoted for their day.
All prices on this page come from our own artist pages, in pounds. They are not averages of what couples have paid. We’ll update this guide when artists join or change their prices.
UK live wedding painter prices in 2026
We looked at every live wedding painter listed for UK weddings on our site. There are 26 of them. Here is how their starting prices break down.
£750 to £899: 10 artists. For example, Mary in Derry from £750, Lydia in Matlock from £800, and Roxana in Manchester from £850.
£900 to £1,499: 13 artists. For example, Tom in Skipton from £900, Maisy in Cardiff from £1,050, and Natasha in Doncaster from £1,395.
£1,500 to £2,500: 3 artists. Devin in Norwich from £1,500, Dorian in London from £1,599, and Jacob near Shrewsbury from £2,200.
£2,500 and above: none of our UK artists start here, but bigger and more detailed paintings can reach this level once quoted.
The middle starting price across all 26 artists is just under £960. A lower price doesn’t mean lower quality, and a higher price doesn’t always mean more experience. Look at each artist’s wedding paintings and reviews, not just the number.

What actually affects the price of a live wedding painter?
If you want a realistic figure in mind before you start messaging artists, these are the six biggest things that change the price.
1) The artist’s experience and demand
Like any craft, experience and demand usually move together. More experienced painters have often refined their process so they can paint well under pressure, developed a style couples book them for, and built a portfolio of live weddings. That shows up in the price, not just for the painting, but for the whole experience: confidence, calm and consistency on the day.
Even so, price doesn’t always follow experience. Some very skilled artists keep their prices lower while they build their wedding work, so look at the paintings first.
2) Where the artist lives compared with your venue
Distance is one of the most common hidden costs. Some artists include travel up to a set distance. Others add it to your quote. If an artist needs to travel far or stay overnight, you may see costs such as:
Mileage: often 40p to 50p per mile after a free distance.
A place to stay: often £100 to £150 a night, if they can’t get home after your wedding.
Trains or flights: for long trips, plus baggage for their materials.
Food and drink: £0 to £50 a day, if a meal isn’t provided at your venue.
Every artist handles this differently, so ask early and there will be no surprises. A nearby artist with a higher starting price can end up costing about the same as one who has to travel a long way.
3) Canvas size and detail
A bigger canvas takes more time and more paint, so it costs more. Detail and size go hand in hand. If you want fine detail, such as faces of guests or the features of your venue, you’ll usually need a larger canvas, because it gives the artist room to capture it.
4) What you want captured
Packages vary because the work varies. The moment you choose matters, whether that’s your ceremony kiss, your confetti exit or your first dance. So does who is in it: just the two of you, the two of you with guests, or a full scene with your venue. Adding loved ones, pets or someone who has passed away is usually an extra charge. Our guide on how to honour a loved one at your wedding has ideas.
Some artists also finish the painting in their studio after your wedding for a more polished result. A simple way to think about it: the more complex the scene and the bigger the canvas, the more time the artist needs. That’s what you’re paying for.
5) Time at your venue
Not all artists charge by the hour, but time still matters. It affects how much background can be painted on the day, whether guests get to watch the painting grow, and how close to finished it is before the artist leaves. Some smaller packages are based on time, especially if you only want the artist for part of your reception. To see how the hours fit into your day, read what happens on the day with a live wedding painter.
6) Optional extras
Extras vary by artist, but common ones include prints (lovely as gifts for family), extra guest portraits if you want both a main painting and take-home art, and framing, either arranged by the artist or recommended locally. Extras can add real value to your booking without changing the main painting.
What is included in a live wedding painting package?
Every artist lists what’s in each package on their page, so always read it before you compare prices. Most packages include the artist’s time at your wedding, all their paint and materials, and the finished painting of the moment you choose. Many also include finishing touches in the studio and delivery to your door.
Things that are often extra: travel beyond the artist’s set distance, a bigger canvas, extra people or pets, framing and prints. If something matters to you, ask for it to be written into your quote.
How payment works
You pay a 30% deposit to secure your date. The balance is due around 90 days before your wedding. Everything, from your messages to your payments, stays in one place on TheWeddingPainters, so you always know where you stand.
How to get an accurate quote
To avoid lots of back and forth, send a short message to three to five artists whose style you love. Include:
Your date and venue, or the area if you haven’t booked yet.
The moment you want painted, such as your ceremony, confetti, first dance or a wide scene.
The style you like, such as soft and romantic, bold and modern, sketchy, or a classic oil look.
The canvas size you have in mind, or ask the artist what they’d suggest.
Any personal touches, such as pets, a loved one, or changes to the background.
Then book a video call with the artists you like most. Their paintings might be wonderful, but you also need to connect with them as a person. Your artist will spend hours at your wedding, chatting to your guests and becoming part of the day. A short call tells you far more than messages can, and it’s the best way to make sure you’re getting good value. Our list of questions to ask before hiring a live wedding painter can help.
On TheWeddingPainters you can message independent artists directly, and it’s easy to manage from your phone, with text updates so you don’t miss a reply. Popular summer Saturdays go first, so read how far in advance to book a live wedding painter too.
Want the wedding art magic at a different budget?
Guest illustrators: on our site, live guest illustrators start from £350 to £620, and one digital portrait artist starts from £220. In the UK, guest illustration is usually cheaper than live painting. That’s mainly because it’s a younger market here than in the US, so prices are still rising. Browse our UK wedding illustrators.
Portrait commissions: painted after your wedding from your favourite photo. Our commission artists start from £355 to £3,000. Read how to commission a wedding portrait painting or browse our portrait commission artists.
If you’re torn, here’s a simple way to decide:
You want the experience and a keepsake: live wedding painting.
You want guest entertainment and take-home gifts: a guest illustrator. If you’re weighing up a photo booth, this is the closer comparison. A photo booth can be great fun, but a guest illustrator is the more special choice, with a hand-drawn portrait in place of a print.
You want an heirloom from your favourite photo: a portrait commission.
