If you’re new to wedding art, it’s easy to assume a live wedding painter and a wedding illustrator are the same thing as both create beautiful artwork during your day.
The difference is really about what they create, how they work, and what you want your guests to experience.
Below is a simple breakdown so you can choose what fits your wedding best.
What Is A Wedding Illustrator?
A wedding illustrator creates quick, personalised portraits of you and your guests during the wedding usually designed as small keepsakes guests can take home.
Illustrators often work with:
pen and ink
markers
watercolour
pencil
or digital tools (tablet + stylus)
Most illustrators artwork are stylised rather than ultra-realistic. Imagine elegant line work, soft colour washes, or playful caricature-style portraits. As they’re designed to be created quickly, an illustrator can usually produce multiple portraits per hour, which makes this option perfect if you love the idea of:
a meaningful thank-you gift guests will genuinely keep
a live “wow” moment guests can watch
Side Note for digital vs traditional illustrations: If your illustrator works digitally, you may also get downloadable files which are easy to share or print, or a time-lapse video of each piece which you can share and rewatch!
It’s a modern, highly versatile format which still feels personal and special.
What Is A Live Wedding Painter
A live wedding painter typically focuses on one main scene (the first kiss, first dance, cake cutting, etc) and turns it into a larger, finished artwork you’ll display at home.
Live painters usually work with:
oil
acrylic
or watercolour on canvas
The result tends to be more detailed and atmospheric: the venue lighting, the mood in the room, and the feeling of the moment. Rather than creating several smaller pieces, a live wedding painter is usually creating one main heirloom piece.
Some painters finish the final details at home after the wedding (especially if varnish or protective finishing is part of their process), then deliver it once it’s fully complete.
The Main Differences
The easiest way to think about it is this: illustrators create lots of small, personalised portraits, while live wedding painters focus on one main scene. An illustrator is usually producing guest portraits as the day unfolds which works beautifully as entertainment and as wedding favours guests can take home. A live painter on the other hand, is typically creating one larger statement piece; the kind of artwork you’ll hang on your wall as a lasting keepsake from the day.
Because of that, the pace and finish are different too. Illustrators are generally quicker, often completing multiple portraits per hour, and their work tends to be more stylised or modern in feel (line work, watercolour washes, playful caricature styles, or digital). Painters work more slowly because they’re building a larger composition, often with more atmosphere and detail (light, setting, emotion) and the final piece is usually a larger canvas designed for display. Styles vary across both, but the simplest split is: illustration = lots of smaller keepsakes, painting = one timeless heirloom piece.
Benefits of Having a Wedding Illustrator
Choose a wedding illustrator if you want:
a live experience guests can gather around
personalised take-home portraits as wedding favours
something fun, modern, and unique
(optional) digital files you can share or print later
It’s one of the easiest ways to make guests feel included and, give them something genuinely thoughtful to take away.
Benefits of Having a Wedding Painter
Choose a live wedding painter if you want:
one timeless, “this is our wedding” piece to display at home
a keepsake that captures the atmosphere and emotion of the day
a statement art piece that can become a family heirloom
an experience that feels calm and magical in the background (guests love watching the progress, and chatting with the artists)
Each painting is a unique piece of art, adding sentimental value and a sense of timelessness to the wedding memories.
It’s been a big few months behind the scenes at The Wedding Painters, and we’re finally ready to share what we’ve been working on.
Our new platform is officially live. 🎉
If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know The Wedding Painters started as a simple idea: make it easy for couples to find a brilliant live wedding painter, and help artists turn their talent into regular, well-paid bookings.
The core idea hasn’t changed. But pretty much everything else has.
In the last week alone, 22 artists have joined the new platform, and we’re only just getting started.
Why we rebuilt the platform
The honest answer? We outgrew the old one.
We had more couples browsing, more artists joining, and more enquiries coming in than the old setup was really built to handle. Things worked… but not as smoothly as we wanted.
So we asked ourselves two questions:
If we were planning our own wedding from scratch, what kind of platform would we want to use to book a live painter?
If we were full-time artists, what tools would genuinely make our lives easier and our income more predictable?
The new platform is our answer to those questions.
What’s new for couples
If you’re a bride, groom, or planner, the main thing we wanted was to make your life easier.
On the new site you can:
Browse artists more intuitively – Clear profiles, examples of real wedding paintings, and an easy way to see their style at a glance.
Filter by location, style and budget – So you’re not scrolling endlessly through people who don’t fit what you’re actually looking for.
Send a single enquiry to one or more artists – Tell us about your wedding once, and reach the painters you love without filling in 10 different forms.
Book with more confidence – Our goal is to make the whole thing feel as straightforward as hiring a photographer: clear quotes, agreed terms, and support if you need help.
We want booking a live wedding painter to feel exciting and fun – not like another admin job on your never-ending wedding to-do list.
What’s new for artists
This part we’re especially proud of.
Live wedding painters are usually juggling a lot: commissions, events, travel, social media, emails… plus the actual painting. The platform is built to take some of that weight off.
On the new version, artists get:
A dedicated profile that actually does you justice – Space for your portfolio, prices, bio, FAQs and real wedding examples.
A steady flow of relevant enquiries – Couples who are actively looking for a live painter, not just “window-shopping”.
Fair, transparent fees – We only make money when you get booked. No complicated subscriptions for the sake of it.
Support from a team that actually understands what you do – We’re building this with you, not just for you.
Seeing 22 artists join in the last week alone has been a lovely confirmation that we’re on the right track. There are traditional oil painters, loose watercolour illustrators, and everything in between – which means couples have much more choice, and artists are surrounded by peers instead of feeling like they’re doing this alone.
Why this matters for live wedding painting
Live wedding painting has exploded in the last few years, but it’s still new to a lot of couples.
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve heard:
“We didn’t even know this was a thing until we found you!”
That’s a big part of why we’re excited about the relaunch.
It gives couples a central place to discover the idea and actually see what’s possible.
It gives artists a home online where they’re not buried on page 9 of Google or endlessly fighting algorithms on social media.
And it helps the whole industry feel more established, professional and trusted.
Our aim is simple: if someone types “live wedding painter” into Google or hears the phrase from a friend, we want The Wedding Painters to be the place they land.
What’s next
This release is foundation, not “finished”.
Over the next few months we’ll be:
Adding more artists across the UK, US and beyond.
Improving how enquiries, deposits and bookings work so everything is smoother for both sides.
Building in more tools for artists to manage their wedding workload in one place.
Creating more content for couples to show different styles, timelines, and budgets.
And we’ll keep listening. A lot of what you see on the site already comes from feedback from both couples and artists.
How to get involved
If you’re a couple or planner: Have a browse through our artists, save your favourites, and send an enquiry when you’re ready. Even if you’re early in planning, it’s never too soon to start chatting to painters – the popular dates go quickly.
If you’re a live wedding painter or wedding portrait artist: We’d absolutely love to hear from you. The platform is growing fast, and we’re always on the lookout for talented new artists to join us.
👉 If you’re ready to join, head over to theweddingpainters.com/join-us and fill in the short form. That’s how we collect everything we need to review your work and get your profile set up on the new platform.
Here’s to the next chapter – more weddings, more paintings, and more couples getting to relive their favourite moments on canvas.

As a live wedding painter it is your duty to capture a couples vision and display it onto canvas. Therefore, the build-up to the wedding taking place is crucial for you and the couple to agree on the styling, capturing moments, and any background imagery they wish to stand out. To help you get started we have broken down some key questions to ask during the build-up, ensuring you are able to provide them with the artwork they envisioned.
1)What Style Of Painting Would They Like?
Most wedding couples will choose their preferred artist by looking at their portfolio and then pick the artists with the style that fits their criteria. As an artist you will most likely have one proffered style or maybe, you are talented enough to specialise in a few. If you do specialise in a few, the first step is to identify which one the couple would prefer for their special day. This ensures there are no surprises later down the line for both you and the couple.
2) What Colour Scheme is The Wedding?
Once the preferred style has been established, you will need to identify the colour theme for their wedding to know which paints to take with you. Outlining the colour theme and the décor allows you to build up your colour palette, and choose what brushes you will need. It also gives you time to visualise the painting itself and decide whether you will need to mix/blend any colours to get the desired effect.
3) Who Are The Main Subjects Of The Painting?
This may seem obvious but if you are completing several portraits throughout the evening then the couple may have specifications about what they want in each. The couple may want you capture the background in certain portraits, themselves in others or focus on the entire wedding party as a whole. Asking even the simple questions removes any worry or doubt later down the line.
4) What Specific Moments Do They Want Capturing?
This will blend into asking the couple who the main subjects are as they will also identify what areas of focus they would like. Typically, you will be capturing the most important moments such as the first kiss, first dance, exchanging of the vows or the cutting of the cake. Knowing exactly which moment the couple would like capturing will allow you to plan and position yourself in the best possible way to capture each feeling and emotion.
5) Are There Specific Size Requirements For The Painting?
The size of the painting will most likely determine how many pieces of art you will complete throughout the evening. Some wedding couples may only want you to focus on one moment created on a large canvas, whereas others may want a few smaller portraits. This will also help you calculate the amount of paint you require along with what easel size to take with you.
6) Do They Have A Specific Budget In Mind?
Organising a wedding requires a lot of forward planning, so couples are going to have a budget for each aspect of their wedding. It will be beneficial to offer multiple wedding packages, so couples have a range to choose from depending on how much they want to spend. These packages don’t have to be fixed in price they may be subject to change, but this will have to be reflected in the price. Couples may want a bespoke package creating to fit their budget. All of this can be determined during the initial conversation to come to a conclusion which suits all.
There will be more questions but these initial 6 will give you a better understanding of each client’s vision, allowing you to build the framework to provide them with a piece they will cherish forever. We hope we have been able to provide you with good foundations to build upon throughout your live wedding painting career.

Ruby Wedding Anniversary Gifts: 40th Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas
Celebrating a 40th wedding anniversary, often referred to as the ruby anniversary, marks a remarkable milestone in a couple’s journey together. After four decades of marriage, this occasion symbolizes profound love, commitment, and the deep emotional connections that have developed over the years. Finding the perfect gift to honor such a special anniversary can be a delightful yet challenging task, as you want to express your heartfelt sentiments through meaningful and personalized anniversary presents.
Understanding the Significance of the 40th Anniversary
The 40th wedding anniversary is a significant milestone that celebrates not just the years of marriage, but also the love and support that couples have shared. This milestone anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the journey the couple has taken together, highlighting the challenges they have overcome and the cherished memories they have created. As couples gather with family and friends to celebrate, they often share stories from their years together, reinforcing the emotional connections that define their relationship. The significance of the ruby anniversary is rooted not only in the longevity of the marriage but also in the profound love that has grown over four decades.
The Meaning Behind Ruby in Anniversary Celebrations
Rubies are precious gemstones, widely recognized for their vibrant ruby red color, which symbolizes love, passion, and strength. The deep red hue of a ruby perfectly encapsulates the intense emotions associated with a marriage that has thrived for 40 years. This gemstone is particularly significant as a gift for the ruby wedding anniversary, representing both the couple’s long-standing relationship and the passion that has flourished over the years. In addition to love, rubies are associated with health and wisdom, qualities that have likely enriched the couple’s journey together. As both the traditional and modern gift for the 40th anniversary, rubies serve as a fitting tribute to celebrate such a remarkable milestone.
Why the 40th Wedding Anniversary is Special

When it comes to wedding gifts, finding one that is both unique, and to the couple’s taste, can be challenging but don’t worry we are here to help. Some couples won’t include details of a wedding gift list in their invitations, so you might be thinking to yourself ‘What is a good wedding gift’ or ‘what to buy a married couple’. Or you might just want to come up with a wedding gift that will be fun and unexpected for them. Don’t worry there are many to choose from.
Typical Great Wedding Gifts
Typically, the gifts that couples receive are either home appliances, vouchers or money. Now we’re not saying these aren’t good gifts, but we’re pretty sure that most people want couples to remember their gift and actually cherish it, so that’s where you have to think outside the box and be more thoughtful.
While some couples may be impressed with a spa treatment, weekend, or experience, others may be shopping for a gift that is even more unique to impress.
Creative Wedding Gifts
When a couple don’t include a list of wedding gifts they would prefer, it gives you the freedom to be much more creative and choose something personal to the couple that will bring a smile to their face when they open it.
You might want to give them something that will memorialise the wedding venue as it was like something out of a fairytale. Or perhaps you have taken a photo of the bride and groom which you would like them to have but wanted it to be more personalised.
This is where a live wedding painter could prove to be a unique and creative gift to give. Once they have been provided with this photo they will be able to sculpt it into a personalised work of art.
Then every time the couple gaze at the painting they will know that you were able to capture a special moment that no one else at their wedding captured. Now you can’t get much more personal than that!
Live Wedding Painter Gifts
It may be however, that you are the bride’s parents and would like to have a live wedding painter actually attend the wedding as a surprise to capture every special moment brushstroke by brushstroke.
These are both beautiful and creative wedding gifts that will be sure to wow both the couple and the guests
De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms is a Grade II listed heritage wedding venue in London’s West End, with history dating back to 1775 and was once the original Freemasons Tavern before becoming a hotel.
The artistically perfect function rooms feature sparkling chandeliers and exquisite oak panelling, meaning that even without decoration you will still feel like royalty. This Asian wedding venue is as grand as it is beautiful, a venue that should definitely not be overlooked.
The Grand Hall is the largest function room at De Vere Grand Connaught and what a spectacle it is. Opening its enormous doors makes you feel like you are stepping into a magical castle and, as you enter the jaw-dropping auditorium the 42-foot-high ceilings and original Grade II listed detailing will take your breath away. This magnificent space can accommodate up to 750 guests theatre style.
The Grand Hall isn’t the only spectacle at this venue as even the lobby itself has marble-lined features, distinctive monochrome chequerboard floor and a majestic staircase which is just the perfect portrait backdrop, setting the scene for your very own fairy tale wedding.
All this grandeur needs something complimentary to catch each heartfelt moment, capturing every feeling of love and laughter as it unfolds. Not many couples know this, but instead of having the conventional wedding photographer capture your special moments you can have a live wedding painter do it instead. Now we know this may not be the ordinary way, but if you’re having your wedding at De Vere Grand Connaught nothing is going to be ordinary.
Live wedding painters bring that sense of uniqueness and individuality to your portraits as they can highlight your feelings in a much more detailed way than a photograph. Plus live wedding painters will provide guests with entertainment throughout your special day.

This wedding venue has been described by English Heritage as having ‘the grandest example of a Victorian Ballroom in existence’. A bold statement but one which we feel lives up to expectations. Once you set your eyes on the astounding auditorium which has been fitted with LED lights that have up to 6 million different colours you’ll see why.
This venue is just a short stroll away from Trafalgar square which makes it one of the most accessible and central Asian wedding venues in the capital. Not only this, but the grand place can hold over 1000 guests! One particular advantage of 8 Northumberland Avenue is that once hired it is exclusively yours on your special day. This means you can design every single aspect and, if you wish, you can work alongside the hotel’s creative partners in case you need a helping hand.
This means that you can certainly add your own unique style and extravagance you so desire. One which you may have overlooked is hiring a live wedding painter. The standard practice is to have a wedding photographer capture all your special moments, and although we agree they should attend, having a live wedding painter work alongside them only makes the day more unforgettable. The live wedding painter will be on hand not only to capture your very special moments in a unique and emotional way, but they will also provide your guests with engaging entertainment. Something we feel they are most likely never to forget.
This way you can be sure that you and your loved ones’ portraits of your first look, first kiss or first dance are unique and express your individuality. Something which no other wedding is likely to have.

Winter weddings are magical in their unique way and can easily teleport you into a real-life fairytale. Whether you tie the knot in the glistening snow under the twinkling stars or create your dream winter wonderland indoors, there are several winter wedding ideas that can bring the winter theme to life on your special day.
Seasonal decor
If your wedding will be held indoors, adding some seasonal decor is a great way to incorporate the winter theme. This could be fairy lights dangling from the ceiling, candles illuminating the aisle, or lanterns on the reception tables — just one of many winter wedding ideas to explore.
Seasonal floral arrangements and evergreen accents
Seasonal floral arrangements and a touch of evergreen accents are great winter wedding ideas that can upgrade the ambiance of the venue. Think poinsettias, petunias, christmas roses, daphnes, and more. These can decorate reception tables, the alter, or even the aisle.
Hot cocoa bar or smores station
What’s a winter wedding without something warm and sweet? Keep your guests feeling cozy and satisfy their sweet tooth with a hot cocoa bar or smores station. You can’t go wrong with these winter classics. You can also make it interactive with a toppings station where people help themselves to marshmallows, cinnamon, chocolate chips, and more.
Layer your bridal look with fur wraps, capes, or long sleeves
You can do a lot with decor, but an appropriate venue takes things to a whole other level. Consider a ski lodge, mountain resort, or even an old castle with a stunning view. Bonus points if you can get a venue with views of snow-covered trees or frozen lakes. Also, certain venues may be able to offer winter activities for guests to partake in which is a great way to keep them entertained.
Get a snow machine
If you’re having an indoor wedding and looking for a classic winter wedding idea that will honour your winter wonderland, consider a snow machine. Activate it at various moments throughout the wedding like when you’re walking down the aisle, while you’re at the alter, or during the reception when everyone is on the dancefloor.
Send your guests home with winter-themed wedding favours
What better way to thank your guests for their time and support than a wedding favour? Stay true to the winter theme with unique wedding snow globes for guests to decorate their homes with or spiced candles that radiate a warm seasonal scent.
Conclusion
We’ve only given you seven winter wedding ideas but there are many more out there. Planning a wedding is not always easy and we understand the desire to bring a vision to life. Winter weddings have a special charm that can make you feel like you’re living in a fairytale on your big day. With the right decor, venue, and various details, the winter-themed wedding you’ve been dreaming of can become a reality.
Whilst a wedding is all about celebrating the companionship of a couple and bringing two sets of family and friends together, it is also an opportunity for everyone invited to let their hair down, have fun and enjoy themselves. Wedding entertainment is therefore an important aspect to consider when planning your wedding and making it a day your guests will never forget.
For this to happen, you need to be mindful of the entertainment options you are planning to provide. A diverse line up of activities will satisfy the interests of all your guests and will also provide an opportunity for both sides of your family to connect, share laughs and get to know one another better.
Mementos
Your wedding day will be one of the most precious moments of your life, and maybe one of the very few times where you get all of your friends and family together in one room, so providing entertainment that will provide momentos that you can treasure for eternity.
Live wedding painters are a trending addition to wedding receptions. A highly talented artist will capture a unique moment from your wedding and will produce a mesmerising portrait of the very moment in front of you and your guests eyes. Another art related entertainment options include live illustrators, who can create a beautiful sketch for you and your guests so that they can have a sentimental keepsake to remember the day.
Creating a memory lane in your reception will encourage your guests to bring photos from your lives together. Your guests can walk through and see the story of your relationship, creating a sense of connectedness with one another. Advice cards are another heartfelt way to capture the magic of the day, allowing your guests to share their wisdom with you.
You can also really capture the joy of the day by providing disposable cameras on tables. Your guests can then snap candid moments throughout the reception which you can relive after your wedding day is over.
Newlywed Based Games
A way to get every guest involved in the fun is by having personalised games based on the the newlywed couple. These playful games incorporate all of your guests, encourage interactions and provide plenty of laughs, usually at the couples expense.
A game of ‘Who Said It’ can test your guests’ knowledge on your relationship, and maybe even provide some revealing insights from your relationship, or perhaps you would prefer the guests to ask the questions in a classic wedding game of ‘Mr or Mrs’. Family Feud or Couple Trivia also goes down a treat, pitching the newly formed families against one another and asking them questions based on your relationship.
Music and Dancing
Music and dancing is a given at most weddings, but instead of hiring a DJ, or even just creating your own playlist, you can try something different to get everyone up on their feet and boogying the night away.
Having a karaoke will give your guests the chance to have the spotlight on them, with crowd favourites and sing along classics, but if you prefer to keep the music to the professionals, a silent disco will allow everyone to enjoy their favourite tunes. A more interactive way to get everyone throwing shapes on the dancefloor is through a dance tutorial, such as salsa or line dancing. Another way to encourage those side steppers in the room to loosen up is by choreographing a dance routine of your own, allowing your guests to join you for your first dance as a couple.
Live Acts
Live acts are a common addition to wedding entertainment. Wedding bands, magicians, stand up comedians and even fire breathers are just a handful of examples. Jazz quartets are another option that can be enjoyed passively throughout the reception, providing a calm ambiance without the pressure of getting people up on their feet and dancing.
If you are seeking a more personalised touch, hiring a tribute band can really get the room bouncing, especially if the band is meaningful to both you as the couple and your guests. Singing waiters and flash mobs are another live act that can be hired at weddings to add a layer of excitement and spontaneity to the evening, providing an unforgettable surprise to all of your friends and family.
Games and Competitions
If you want to provide some friendly competition between your family and friends, then games such as giant Jenga, Croquet and Limbo are perfect for summer weddings. You could even raise the stakes and see which side of the couple comes out on top in a wedding sports day, with events such as wheelbarrow races and tug of wars. Keeping on the competitive theme, ‘dance of’ between your family and friends is sure to bring some unforgettable moments. But if you want to provide some really unique entertainment, hosting a mediaeval tournament will certainly provide plenty of laughs, as your guests get into character in their mediaeval costumes and plastic swords with competitions such as jousting and melees.
Children’s Activities
In the likelihood that there will be children at your wedding, providing them with their own area to have fun will keep them occupied throughout the evening. Face painting, arts and crafts and bouncy castles are common forms of entertainment that the children will love, and maybe even some of the bigger kids you invited.
Table Activities
Table activities are always appreciated at a wedding, especially if guests or placed on tables with people they are less familiar with. These games will get everyone interacting and sharing plenty of laughs with one another. Games such as wedding speech bingo and wedding cards against humanity add a personalised touch, or placing some after eights on the table will undoubtedly lead to your guests attempting the after eight challenge.
Food and Drink Activities
Whilst most weddings have a buffet for guests to indulge in, and a bar to satisfy the taste buds, using food and drink to incite conversations between guests is a simple but effective way to create natural opportunities for conversations. Tasting sessions, such as craft beer, wine or whisky, serve a unique way for guests to find their tipple for the evening, and a mixologist-led cocktail making session encourages mingling between guests to bond over their creations.
A ‘make your own pizza’ station allows guests to personalise their own meals and makes for an entertainment option the kids can get involved in, and for those with a sweet tooth, a chocolate fountain will go down a treat.
