So you can paint, and you have seen artists painting live at weddings. You want to know if you could do it too, and whether it can pay. It can, in the UK and in the US. This guide shows you how, using real prices and booking data from our own platform.
First, an honest note on who we are. We are Jack and Huw, the founders of The Wedding Painters. We are not painters, so we will not try to teach you how to hold a brush. You know your craft far better than we do. What we know well is the business side: what couples pay, what they look for, and what turns an enquiry into a booking. We see it every week across the live wedding painters on our site in the UK and the US.
Most of this guide applies wherever you paint. Where things differ between the UK and the US, such as prices, insurance and paperwork, we split the section so you can read the part that fits you.
Key facts at a glance
The Wedding Painters is a UK-based marketplace that connects couples with vetted live wedding painters, guest illustrators and portrait artists in the UK, the US and Europe. Live wedding painters on The Wedding Painters start at £950 per wedding in the UK. Across the 10 US live wedding painters on The Wedding Painters, starting prices ran from $1,500 to $5,000 in October 2026, with a median starting price of $2,800 before travel. A live wedding painting usually takes five to seven hours on the wedding day, plus time in the studio to finish it. In 90 days of quotes on The Wedding Painters in 2026, couples booked 40% of the time when the artist sent two follow-up messages after quoting, and never when the artist sent none.
How do you become a live wedding painter?
You become a live wedding painter by learning to finish a painting of a couple, at their venue, in the five to seven hours of a wedding day. Then you build a small portfolio that proves you can do it, set your prices, sort out insurance, and find couples, either on your own or through a platform that vets and promotes you.
Being a strong painter is only part of the job. The rest is working calmly in front of a crowd, planning your day, and running a small business. The sections below take each part in turn.
What can a live wedding painter earn?
Live wedding painters on our platform start at £950 per wedding in the UK. In the US, the middle starting price across our artists is $2,800. The figures below are what couples pay for a booking, before your costs and any platform fee.
In the UK
On The Wedding Painters, live painters start at £950 for one wedding. That is our floor, because we know how much work goes into a live painting. New artists usually charge £950 to £1,200. Skilled artists with a good name tend to charge £1,500 to £2,200. For the best artists, £2,200 stops being a top price and becomes a starting price, and many go well beyond it.
To give a sense of scale, 25 weddings a year at £1,500 each comes to £37,500 before costs. Many painters start with a few weddings alongside other ways of earning from their art and grow from there. Our UK guide to live wedding painter prices shows how couples see these costs.
In the US
US prices run higher. On October 8, 2026, we checked the packages of all 10 live wedding painters on our US artist pages. Their starting prices run from $1,500 to $5,000, and the middle figure is $2,800. Eight of the ten packages each artist marks as most popular sit between $2,400 and $4,500.
Canvas size alone does not set the price. Seven of those artists use a 16×20 inch canvas for their smallest package, and they start anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500. The difference comes from skill, medium, how much detail is included, and how much finishing happens in the studio afterwards.
These are the starting prices artists publish, not averages of completed bookings. They also leave out travel. US artists often cover a wide area and travel in for each wedding, so every quote adds travel, and a hotel where an overnight stay is needed. Our guide to live wedding painter costs in the USA breaks these prices down artist by artist.
What about wedding illustrators?
Some wedding artists draw instead of paint. Wedding illustrators sketch guests and couples live on the day, in a quick and lively style. The kit is lighter and the pay is lower. In the UK, most illustrators earn £500 to £1,000 per wedding, and they start at £450 on our platform. If income is your main goal, live painting earns more per wedding. Illustrator prices are rising, though, as more couples discover it. Our guide to what a wedding illustrator does explains the role in more detail.
Which style of painting sells best?
On our platform, paintings that clearly look like paintings win the most bookings. Couples love work where they can see the brush strokes and the artist’s hand. It is full of skill and detail, but no one would mistake it for a photograph. Browse our UK live wedding painters and US live wedding painters to see the styles couples are booking.
Very realistic work, the kind that looks almost like a photo, is still in demand and takes great skill. But if this is your style, you have to prove the work is yours. Couples now worry about AI images, so a good photo of a finished piece is not enough. Show video of yourself painting, and speak to camera about who you are and how you work. A painterly piece carries some of that proof in its brush strokes. A hyperrealistic one does not, so you have to supply it.
Abstract art is a fine art form, but it rarely suits weddings. Couples want to see themselves in the painting.
What works best is life-like work with a painter’s touch, plus personal details. Think about who the couple are. A hobby, a pet or a favourite place in the background turns a nice painting into their painting. Some couples ask for a lost loved one to be painted into the scene, which is something no camera can do. Handle that request with care, and see our guide to honouring a loved one at a wedding.
How should you price a live wedding painting?
Price by detail, not by canvas size. A painting of just the couple takes far less time than one with recognisable guests, flowers and the whole venue behind them. Detail and size are linked, because a busy scene needs a bigger canvas to avoid looking crowded. So agree the detail first, then choose the size to match.
Couples who have never commissioned art often cannot say how much detail they want. Ask three questions they can answer straight away instead. What moment would you like painted? Should family and guests in the background be recognisable? Should the venue be recognisable, or is it a backdrop? Those answers decide most of the hours, and so most of the price. We explain why in Stop Asking Couples How Much Detail They Want.
Offer a few clear packages, from a couple-only scene to a full scene, and list your add-ons. Common add-ons include extra people, pets, a loved one painted in, framing and prints. Remember that the wedding day is not the end of the job. Many painters take the piece back to the studio to add fine detail and finish it, so build those hours into your price. For more, read our guide on how to price your art. It also helps to know the questions couples ask before hiring a live wedding painter, so your packages answer them up front.
What kit do you need?
Every artist has their own preferences, and as non-painters we will not tell you which brands to buy. What we can share is the kind of kit our artists bring, so nothing gets left at home. You do not need it all at once. If you are wondering whether better kit makes better paintings, read Does Quality Painting Equipment Affect Your Artwork?
A sturdy, portable easel. It should fold away for travel and stay upright if a guest bumps into it.
Your canvas or paper. Most live painters use canvas because it holds detail and travels well. Bring the size you agreed with the couple.
Paint and a palette. Many live painters choose acrylic because it dries fast. If you paint in oils, a fast drying medium helps, and a stay wet palette keeps acrylics workable through a long day.
Brushes. Bring fine brushes for faces and wide ones for backgrounds. Our guide to brush care will help them last.
Good lighting. Wedding venues are often dim, especially in the evening. A battery powered LED lamp helps you see true colours. If you cannot see the colour of the dress, you cannot paint it.
Cleaning kit and floor cover. Wipes, cloths, water or solvent, and a drop cloth protect the venue from spills.
Business cards. Guests love watching a painter at work, and some will be planning weddings of their own.
What happens on the wedding day?
You will usually have five to seven hours to paint. Here is how experienced painters handle the time. For a fuller walk-through, see our guide to the steps to take when painting at a wedding.
Prepare before you arrive. Many painters tone the canvas with a warm wash at home, and some block in the venue in advance. A white canvas is slower to start and harder on the nerves.
Paint from reference photos. People move, so take a few clear photos of the key moment, such as the first kiss or first dance. Paint from those, and look up at the room to catch the light and mood.
Push through the messy middle. Every painting looks rough partway through, and that is when guests gather to watch. Stay calm, smile, chat, and keep going.
Plan the finish. Agree with the couple what they will see at the end of the night, and when the finished piece will reach them after any studio work.
You are part of the entertainment as well as the artist. Being warm and easy to talk to matters as much as your speed. To see the day from the couple’s side, read what happens on the day with a live wedding painter.
What insurance and paperwork does a live wedding painter need?
Good venues expect suppliers to be insured, and couples feel safer booking an artist who is. The details differ between the UK and the US. This section is general guidance, not legal or tax advice, so check the rules that apply to you.
In the UK
Public liability insurance covers you if a guest trips over your easel or your paint damages the venue. Most venues will ask to see it, and many specialist insurers offer cover for artists and event suppliers.
PAT testing is a safety check for anything you plug in, such as a lamp. Many venues ask for proof that your electrical kit has been tested.
Registering with HMRC. If you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year, you need to register for Self Assessment and file a tax return. Keep a record of what you earn and spend on materials, travel and insurance from your first booking.
In the US
General liability insurance does the same job as UK public liability cover. Many venues ask for a certificate of insurance before the wedding, and some ask to be named on it as an additional insured. Your insurer can usually issue this quickly.
Business registration and sales tax. Rules on registering a business, local licences and charging sales tax differ from state to state, and sometimes city to city. Check with your state before your first paid booking, and set money aside for tax on your earnings.
When is wedding season, and how far do live painters travel?
Wedding work is seasonal, so plan your year around the busy months.
In the UK
Most UK weddings take place between May and September, and Saturdays in those months book up first. Winter weddings are fewer, which leaves time for studio work and portrait commissions. Many UK painters charge mileage beyond a set distance, and add a hotel when a wedding is too far to travel home afterwards. Our guide on how far in advance to book a live wedding painter shows the booking timeline from the couple’s side.
In the US
In much of the US, autumn and late spring are the busiest seasons, while in hotter southern states the cooler months tend to fill first. US artists also travel further. Our US painters usually cover weddings within about four hours’ drive or a short flight of home. Their advertised prices leave out travel, and each quote adds flights, car hire and a hotel where needed. Destination weddings are a real opportunity, because one booking can become a few days of well paid work.
How do you get your first live wedding painting booking?
The question new painters ask us most is how to show a couple they can paint a wedding when they have never painted one. You need wedding work to win weddings, but you need weddings to make wedding work. There are two ways to break that loop.
Paint a real wedding. Ask a friend or relative who is getting married if you can paint their day for free, or for the cost of materials. In return you get photos of yourself at work, the finished piece, and the couple’s reaction. This is the strongest proof, because you really were there, live.
Paint from wedding photos. Build your portfolio by painting scenes from photos of friends’ and family weddings. This shows your skill and style, but it does not prove you can work live, so add real event work as soon as you can. Our guide to getting your first wedding client goes further.
Whichever route you take, show yourself as well as your art. A couple is not only buying a painting. They are inviting you into their wedding, so they want to know you will be warm with their guests. Fill your portfolio with friendly photos of you at work, and film the moment a couple first sees their painting. That short clip often does more than any advert. It also proves the work is truly yours.
You do not need years of weddings behind you to start. Alice joined our platform in March 2026 with a handful of wedding paintings. Within 79 days she had received 19 enquiries and confirmed 4 bookings. You can read more stories like hers in our artist case studies.
How can gift cards help you reach more couples?
Most artists only reach couples who are already planning a wedding. Gift cards open up a second audience: the family and friends who want to give a couple something special.
The Wedding Painters now offers gift cards that anyone can buy and give towards a couple’s wedding art. Buyers can give alone, or start a group gift and invite up to 20 people by email. The couple then chooses an artist on the platform and puts the gift towards their booking. Gift cards work with any artist on the platform, so a couple who receives one can choose you.
Here’s why that matters for you.
A wider audience. Your followers include the parents, friends and colleagues of couples who are engaged or about to be. They may never book a painter themselves, but they might give one.
A lower barrier to booking you. A live painting is a big decision for one couple to take on alone. When guests share the cost through a group gift, it’s easier for the couple to say yes, and gift cards start at just £25 or $25. Each card goes up to £1,500 or $2,000, and buyers can give more than one, so bigger packages are covered too.
Something easy to share. Instead of another “book me” post, you can share a gift idea: “Know someone getting married? Give them a painting from their day.” It’s a lighter ask that works for engagements, showers, anniversaries and Christmas.
To get started, put the gift cards page link in your bio and Stories during engagement season and in the run-up to Christmas. Pair it with a post of your own paintings, so people picture the gift. And when a couple enquires, tell them that if friends ask what to give, a gift card can go towards their booking.
One thing to keep in mind: a gift card doesn’t reserve a date or a particular artist, so the couple still chooses. Your job is to be the artist they choose, which means making your portfolio, reviews and process videos easy to find.
How do live wedding painters turn enquiries into bookings?
What you do after you send a quote matters more than how fast you send it. We looked at 90 days of quotes sent on The Wedding Painters in 2026. Couples who heard nothing from the artist after the quote never booked. One follow-up message lifted bookings to 20%, two to 40%, and three or more to 50%.
Speed still matters, but most of our artists already reply quickly. Half of all quotes on our platform go out within two hours. Quotes sent within an hour did not book any better than quotes sent a day or two later. So reply the same day, even if it is a short note saying a full quote is coming. Then follow up with warm, specific messages about the couple’s day, each with one clear next step. You can read the full findings in What Quote Response Times Actually Do to Your Bookings.
Offer a short video call too. Couples are choosing a person to spend their wedding day with, and seeing your face and hearing about your process helps them decide. For one small habit that makes a difference, read The Two-Minute Habit That Wins More Wedding Bookings.

How do you join The Wedding Painters?
We vet every artist before they go live, in the UK, the US and Europe. Couples trust us to introduce them to real, talented people, so one or both of us interviews every applicant and reviews their portfolio in detail. We check that you can paint, that you are a real working artist, and that couples will enjoy working with you.
To apply, you need at least three portfolio images, two process images and a profile photo. At least one image must show you working on site, painting in your studio, or with a past client holding your work. We do not accept AI-generated or AI-enhanced artwork of any kind. We also ask artists to reply to enquiries within 24 hours. A portfolio built up over months, with an active Instagram account, gives us the confidence to approve you quickly.
Once you are approved, we build your listing from your existing portfolio, and you can be live within 48 hours. There is no monthly fee. New artists pay a 25% commission, and only when a couple books. Couples pay a 30% deposit to secure the date, the balance is collected automatically before the wedding, and your money is released 24 hours after the event.

Where these figures come from
UK starting prices are the minimum prices The Wedding Painters accepts from live painters and illustrators. US prices are the published starting packages of all 10 US live wedding painters listed on The Wedding Painters, each checked on October 8, 2026. They are not averages of completed bookings. The follow-up and response-time figures come from 90 days of quotes and bookings on the platform in 2026. We update this guide when prices or platform terms change.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need art qualifications to become a live wedding painter?
No. Couples and venues judge you on your portfolio, your reviews and how you come across, not on a degree. What matters is that you can finish a recognisable, emotional painting of a couple within a wedding day.
How long does a live wedding painting take?
Most live painters work for five to seven hours on the day. Many then spend more time in the studio adding fine detail before delivering the finished piece a few weeks later.
Should you paint in oils or acrylics?
Both work. Acrylic is popular because it dries quickly, which helps when the painting has to travel at the end of the night. Oil painters often use a fast drying medium and finish in the studio.
Do you need insurance to paint at weddings?
Yes, in practice. UK venues usually ask for public liability insurance and PAT testing of electrical kit. US venues usually ask for general liability insurance and a certificate of insurance before the day.
How much does a live wedding painter charge per wedding?
On our platform, UK live painters start at £950, and skilled artists often charge £1,500 to £2,200 or more. Across our 10 US artists, starting prices run from $1,500 to $5,000, with a middle figure of $2,800, before travel.
Can US artists join The Wedding Painters?
Yes. We list live wedding painters and illustrators across the US, and we are actively looking for more artists in every region.
